In addition to the 250cc GP, there will be 125cc Support class racing tha t will take place in between the GP motos. The line-up for this class looks like an AMA 125cc National and includes defending 125cc National Champion Jeff Emig, Larry Ward, Doug Dubach, Ryan Hughes, Michael Craig, Tim Ferry, Mike Ferry and former champ Johnny O'Mara, The Grand Prix contestants will compete in three 25-minute plus two-lap motos, while the Support class riders will compete in two 3O-minute plus twolap motos. In the GP division, points are awarded in each moto (20 for 1st; 17 for 2nd; 15 for 3rd; 13 for 4th, 11 for 5th, 10 for 6th and one less point for each place down to 15th). The rider who accumula tes the most points after the three motos is declared the "overall" winner. But the GP regulars are more concerned about points than scoring an overall victor y . It's not uncommon to see riders p u ll out of a mo to if t h e y have no chance of finishing among the top 15; they're doing so to save their energy for the next moto. While the Budds Creek GP might be just an "exhibition" race to Stanton, Kiedrowski, Bradshaw, and most of the American contingent, it means everything to the GP regulars, because not only is a title at stake but so are future top-notch rides. A high finishing position in the series can assure that a rider will either retain a good ride or obtain one the next year. For the one-GP-a-year rid ers, it's a battle for bragging rights and the sa tisfaction of knowing tha t you beat or mixed it up with the best in the world. Perhaps the best way to enjoy the GP is to make a complete weekend ad ven -' ture out of it. While you're in this neck of the woods, you should make plans to come a few days early and check out the n ea rb y sights and muse u ms. Approximately an ho ur's drive from the tra ck, you ca n visi t Washington D.C. a n d check o ut th e Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, Theodore Roosevelt Island, the White House, and the many offeri ngs from the Smithsonian group of m useums, including a mus t see, the Smithsonian Na tional Air and Space Museum - plan on spending the whole day there. All these sights are almost within wa lking-distance of one another. But if you're totally into racing, you can get a full measure of that, too: A full slate of amateur races will be conducted at Budds Creek prior to the GP. On Friday, July 16, amateur racing will be conducted on the GP track in the day, time and then a supercross-style race will be held on the facility's stadium track that evening. On Saturday, July 17, another stadium MX will be conducted as will a hare scrambles, both taking place while the GP riders are practicing and qualifying for Sunday's race. Saturday's action will conclude with _ another stadium race during the evening. Camping is available for the entire weekend. In addition to the amateur racing on Satu rday, you can watch the GP racers practice beginning at 11 a.m . On race day, timed practice (which determines star ting posi tions) begins at 9:30 a.m ., an d the gate w ill drop on the firs t GP moto at 1 p.m .
