Italian national team members Andrea Bartolini and Alessio Ch iodi took their Hondas to a 12 success, with French Suzuki star Yves Demaria third. The trio shared the mo to wins . It was Bartolini 's second career GP win . The Italian riders' results had little effect on the sta ndings as both of them had missed GPs ear lier this year due to injury, b ut Demaria's 48 point ha ul lifted him into second in the series point s ta ndi n gs b ehind H olland's Pedro Tragter. The Dutch pace-setter had his best GP since the series left the sand tracks behind and he finished fifth on the day afte r making the top five in each moto. Losing 11 points to Dem aria, he no w leads the Fren ch m a n b y 34, bu this points c us h ion actua lly inc re ased, as Finland's Dave Strijbos, his closes t rival at the start of the day, struggled to score just 19 points. The 1986 champ crash ed out of th e first moto trying desperately to imp rove his position after a bad start. After get ting away poorly aga in in race two he could not climb bet ter than eighth, and lo st fu rther g rou nd w ith a final moto fifth. Two riders saw their title hopes fade completely. Dutchman Rem y Van Rees cou ld collect just 10 points on the da y, while German Peter Seirer was eliminated in qualification. The Su zuki rider , who won the Czech GP two weeks prev io usly, had crashed out o f the final mo to of the previous weekend's German GP when going for another.win and the knee injury susta ined in t hat crash proved just too painful in San Marino.
