GDIRTTRACK ~ Home state favorite Jay Spri ngs teen (9) topped Ricky Graham (3) in the 883 Nat ional. (Left to right) Parker, Graham and Morehead were delighted w ith the ir per formances. Will Davis (21)was fourth, while Ronnie Jones (16)suffered a flat with five laps to go. 14 Nati onal As usual, one's starting spot would be crucial to the ou tcome of the race, or at least that's what everyone thought. Fast heat winner Graham got first pick on the line and chose the outside pole, right in the center of the groove. Davis was next and parked alongside Graham, while .Rog e rs, Hale, Beattie and Springsteen filled the front row. Farris lined up on Graham's rea r fender with Morehead, Jones, Hill, Colso n and A therton to his left, while Fletc her, Fisher, Camlin, Parker and Carr sat on row three. Wh en the light turned green, Davis won the drag race into tum one ah ead of Ro ge rs , Graham, Morehead, Sp ring st een and Jones. Graham put Davis away a nd took th e lead by the third lap. Meanwhile, Parker's p re-race strategy was shaping up as he joined the front runners by motoring into second behind Graham. "I was up front by the third lap. Right from the start 1 went to the top and said 'Let's get it onl'" Parker took the field by s u rp r is e and many tried to duplicate his lines, but were held to the groove by lowline set-ups. Morehead was one of the racers who went to s ch o ol behind Parker. "Scotty went up top and 1 went righ t up top behind him," sa id Morehead. "The track bru shed off in to a big wide groove. It was a big arc." The Findlay Flyer moved into third, while a da zed Davis held on to fourth. On Ia p four, Park er s moked past Graham on the high line and took over the lead. "I was on the bottom and I heard a Briggs and Stratton on the outsi de and Scotty flew by. I d idn't know where to go . I went up high, but I had to come back dow n a nd s ta r t to th ink," sa id Graham. At the halfway point, Grah am looked most comfortable on the bott om of the groove, behind Parker, wh o led a few feet hig her up. Morehead was a lonely third, while Da vis had hi s hands full with a charging Jones, Carr , Rogers, Springsteen and Hale. "I saw Scotty go up but I couldn't get a hold of nothing up ther e and had to just'come back down and let them by," said Sp rings teen. Afte r chasing after Parker for much of the race, Graha m reasserted himself a t the poi n t and with fiv e laps to go , pulled ou t a command ing lead. "The gro ove pushed off an d I had to come back down," said Parker. "I was se t up for up top, and I just couldn' t go as fast down low." Graha m flew across th e fini sh lin e w it h a seven -bike len g th lead over Parker, who in tum enjoyed a comfo rt- » able margin over Moreh ead . Davis held on to fourth, while Carr man ag ed to work in to fifth from his third-row sta rt. Jones held control of fifth for most of the race, but fell victim to a flat tire w ith only five laps to go. "I feel good about fifth from the third row," said Carr. "I kinda got a gift from Ronnie when he got a flat. Losi ng 10 poin ts to Ricky doesn't help , but it's still rather early in the season. We'll just keep plugging away. We're not desperate...yet." Springsteen finished sixth, despite losing his steel shoe. Hale, Atherton, Rogers and Farris rounded out the top 10. (:N Results TIME TR IALS, 1. Rkky Graham (21.839); 2. Rusty Rogers (21. 884); 3.
