"I didn 't think I could beat Pinsonnault's run because I thought I was topped ou t in my first try, " sai d Wilkins, who now sits in a tie for second in the series point standing s with Alan Hoskins, who was fifth o n th e day. "I figu red that on the second run I had to be smooth and not back off. In the first ru n I backed off maybe twice, so this time I kept it pegged. The faster I went the smo oth er it go t. Grea t run, eh." Pinsonnault and Everett are tied for third with 45 points each . Greg Williams w as the fir st 800c c class rider to attack the hill, and he rode his four-cylinder, ni tro-burning Honda to a 6.656 on his first attempt. On his second try, Williams bettered his time to 6.506,good enough for fourth in class. Lou Gerencer Jr. powered his way up the hill aboard his Harley-Davidson for a first-run time of 7.099, and turned in a better mark of 6.308 on his second try for second overall. After being plagued with transmission problems at the previous round, multi -time 540cc class champ Tim Frazier, who this year switched to the 800cc class, started the day aboard the sa me problematic BSA. Frazier only mad e it to the 55-foot mark on his first run before the tranny gave out again. Frazier transferred his number plates to his fa the r-in law's (Lou Gerencer Sr.) Har ley-Davidson and rolled to the line for his second run. Fra zier, decked out in blu e-and-white MX a tti re, fired up the hill and looked as if he were born to ride Har leys. His run was straight and fast·with no hesitation, and he stopped th e clocks at 6.413, good enough for third. Later, Frazier would not comment on his pl ans for the rest of the sea so n whether or not he would be riding the Earl Bowlb y-tuned BSA or Gerenc er 's Har ley-Davidson. When .asked if he now had a new team member, Gerencer Sr. smiled and repl ied , "A lot is going on; w e' ll see what happens in the weeks to come." Reiser a nd his Team USA HarleyDavidson clicked off a 6.968 in their first trip up the hill, but before the start of his seco nd run it seemed as if Reiser strapped on the rocket boosters. His second run was executed so stra igh t and fast, that the launch and climb seemed blurred . Reiser's masterful second run was clocked at 6.305, the fastest of the day. " I had an advantage in that Tim Frazier had to get on a Harley this week. After watching that skillful gu y come out of the pits reall y fast and give the moto rcycle a little body English to get it sucked back in the groove and over the top, I figured , 'Heck, I can do that: So I d id exactly what Tim d id, I just got through the rough a little easier than he did ." Reiser's win added 15 points to his se r ies tally, and h e lead s the point stand ings with 54 , six ahead of Williams, who has 48. Frazier and Harry Schreiber , seventh at Hornell, are tied for third with 42. cv Results SIlk 1. Ted Wilkins (Rtx); 2. Pau l Pinsonnault (Hon) ; 3. Scott Everett (Tn); 4. Michael DeBusk (USA); 5.
