Two ~rothers Racing's Tommy Lynch and Nick lenatsch completed 52 laps in the 90minute race to top Fastline/MCM Suzuki (Suz) by 7.658 seconds. Third place went to Dutchman Racing (Yam). In the GTU one-hour endurance race, Southwest Motorsports (Yam) took the win over Moto Liberty/Nankai (Suz) and Hornblower Racing (Hon). Ted Wilkins (Rtx) topped the 540cc class and Tom Reiser (H-D) was the winner in the 800cc class at the Hornell M.e.promoted round of the AMA National Championship Hillclimb Series at Avoca, New York, June 20. Paul Pinsonnault (Hon) was second and Scott Everett (Tri) third in the 540cc division. In the 80Dec class, Lou D. Gerencer (H-D) finished second and 540cc National Champion Tim Frazier finished third. Frazier's BSA gave up the fight on his 'first attempt and he borrowed his father-in-law's HarleyDavidson for his second and final attempt.' Brit Joey Dunlop (Hon) became the winningest rider in Isle of Man IT history when he scored his 15th victory in the June 7 125cc TT. The 41-year-old Englishman had been in a tie for most wins,14, with the late Mike Hailwood. Dunlop won the 125cc IT after a racelong battle with his brother Robert Dunlop (Hon), who finished second. In winning, Dunlop averaged 107.26 mph with his fastest lap run at 108.55 mph. Phillip McCallen (Hon) averaged 118.32 mph with a fast lap of 120.65 mph on his way to the win in the Senior IT. The June 19 Dallas Half Mile at Devil's Bowl Speedway in Dallas, Texas, wa~ rained out and rescheduled for August 14. After the race was rained out on Saturday, competitors returned early Sunday morning only to be greeted by the same foul weather. Tickets for the Mike Kidd Promotions-promoted event will remain on sale through Central Ticket Agency at 800/462-7979, and all tickets will be honored in August. Texan Terry Poovey, the local favorite was pleased that the Dalla~ Half Mile was rained out on Saturday night but his joy turned to sorrow when it was rained out on Sunday as well. Had the race run Sunday, it would have been an afternoon event, unlike the night program scheduled for Saturday. "If the race had run during the day on Sunday, the track would have been dry with a narrow groove," said Poovey, who in his long career has suffered only one defeat at Devil's Bowl Speedway. "No one has ever raced a motorcycle there at night, so no one will really have an advantage. I would have had it dialed during the daytime, though." Don't be surprised to see Poovey doing a rain dance in the pits on Saturday night, August 14. So far, the 1993 AMA Grand National Championship Series looks to be one of the most exciting in years. In the last five years, no more than six different racers have scored race wins in any single series, but in only the first six races of 1993, five different riders have stood atop the podium. So far, Grand National Champion Chris Carr is the only double race-winner, arid is joined by Scott Parker, Ricky Graham, Dan Ingram and Kevin Atherton as 1993 race winners. Chances of the winner's list growing look good, as many insiders predict that privateers Will Davis, Rusty Rogers and George Roeder II have a good shot at a win during the next few half mile rounds at Lima, Hagerstown and Oklahoma City. Greg Albertyn (Hon) recorded his fifth win of the World Cnampionship 250cc MX Series by winning the British GP at Foxhill Park, June 20. The South African won the first two motos and finished second to Belgian Stefan Everts (Suz) in the third moto. Home country favorite Kurt Nicoll (Hon) was the runner-up with 2-5-3 moto finishes, while third went to Everts with 10-8-1 placings. Rounding out the top five were American Tallon Vohland (Suz), who finished second in the second moto, and Great Britain's Colin Dugmore (Suz). American Donny Schmit (Yam) finished sixth overall via a DNF-3-4.tally. Californian Bob Moore (Suz) broke his ankle in the first moto. Albertyn now enjoys a 96--point lead in the series over Everts, 409-313. Schmit is a ~tant third with 208. Six events remain in the 15round series. 2 According to Jim Pegram, the July 10 Hagerstown Half Mile will mark the return of Larry Pegram, who has missed all of the AMA Grand National Championship Series races to this date due to injuries suffered in a road race crash at the Phoenix Superbike National in February. In Pegram's absence, former Team Harley-Davidson rider Kevin Atherton has been racing the Skip Eaken-tuned, Texas Harley-Davidsonsponsored Harley XR750s, and he piloted one of the bikes to a runaway victory at the Parkersbu~g Half Mile. Rather than part ways with Atherton upon Pegram's return, Eaken plans to field a two-man team for the rest of the season. In his first attempt, Fred Andrews (Yam) scored the overall win at the 19tp Annual Blackwater 100 in Davis, West Virginia, June 20. Andrews beat fourtime National Enduro Champion Randy Hawkins (Suz) to the finish line by approximately 30 seconds, while former Blackwater 100 winner Tom Norton (Kaw), Jeff Russell (KTM) and .Larry Roeseler (Kaw) rounded out the top five overall. The event was the eighth round of the AMA Wiseco/Yamaha/ Dunlop National Cross Country Series, An AMA competition bulletin dated June 15 reveals that Yamaha will soon market a titanium sub frame for YZRs. While aftermarket subframes of aluminum or steel have been permitted, according to the bulleting, the use of subframes "made from materials other than steel or aluminum will now be considered for 'approval by .the AMA on a case to case basis with regard to availability and price." The bulletin then lets the cat out of the bag as far as Yamaha's titanium subframe is concerned: "A new otors~OrtsJ ,_ _ ,~ ,_ " Allen Becker, chairman and chief executive officer of PACE Entertainment Corporation, Inc., and Bill West, president and founder of SuperSports, Inc., announced on June 8 that they have joined forces to maximize several growth opportunities in the world of motorsports. Poet Motorcycles Inc. of Bozeman, Montana, has purchased the entire remaining Maico parts inventory from Maico Motorcycles USA. Loy Lyons, 58, passed away at his home in Carbazon, California, on July 10, the victim of cancer of the liver. Lyons was the owner/tuner of the BSA that Phil Todd campaigned at Ascot Park in the late '60s. Loy raced at Ascot as a Novice and then a Junior before finding his niche as a tuner. Loy and Todd teamed up to take high point Junior honors at Ascot in 1967 and fifth in the final point standings at Ascot as an Expert the following year. The BLM has announced that they'll close the "traditional starting area and all former pits and courses for the Barstow-to-Vegas motorcycle race from November 24 through November 28, 1993." The closure marks the fourth consecutive year that public lands have been made off-limits to motorized vehicles over the Thanksgiving Day weekend. Excluded from the closure are California State Highway 127, Basin Road, Rasor Road, Kingston Road (also known as Excelsior Mine Road), and that portion of the B-to-V cou.rse that runs easterly from Kingston Road, then north on Green's Well Road to the Boulder Corridor.
