GLEN HELEN, CA, MAY 9
Doug Yarnell showed that age is not always the
most important lactor in motocross racing, as he
led the John Burr Cycles team to a strong showing in the
round of Glen Helen Raceway's
Inland EmpJ.re Dealer Series, with a win in the
+30 division.
The event saw a lot of good-sport moms give
up their Mothers' Day so that kids and husbands could go rBcing. Mother Nature made her
presence f~lt as she kiclc.ed up some pretty good
wmds, which along WIth the heat, made it difficult to keep moisture in the track.
John Burr Cycles was out in force, fielding
the largest team of the day.
Yarnell and Mark Declc.er, who was racing in
the +25 class but was on the trad at the same
tim~ as Yarnell, seem to malc.e it a habit of going
agalOSt each other. Each won their respective
age divisions. Paul Wright of Montclair Yamaha
and Kenny Maddux of Yamaha of Cucamonga
followed Decker home, while Mark Stoup and
Steve Fortune, both of North County Yamaha,
came away with the place and show spots
against Yarnell.
Sam Ramirez of Honda/Yamaha of
Redlands had no trouble coming up with the YZ
Vet Beginner win. Rob Smith of B&B Cycles and
Karl Fernandez of Montclair Yamaha tried to
stay close and actually did a good job, but it
wasn't quite good enough.
John Burr Cycles had a good chance of having a sweep in the 2S0cc Beginner YZ race.
Sheer numbers alone made the odds in their
favor: Of the 11 riders, eight were riding for the
Fontana shop. Michael Flowers led the team for
• the grand slam, but teammates Bryan Lamborn
and Chris Lembo didn't malc.e it easy for him as
they were both right there waiting for the ntistalc.e that never came. In fact the only pass came
on the second lap when Lamborn got by
Lembo.
Montclair Yamaha pulled off the same feat in
the 250cc YZ Novice race. Ale. zapata led the
way with teammate Mark Higham in hot pursuit. They batted a thousand since they were the
only two from Montclair in the race. Joe Nevins
of Beaumont Yamaha/Kawasaki beat out Joe
Ryan of John Burr for the third.
Justin Snyder of Honda/Yamaha Redlands
not only won the 12Scc YZ Beginner but came
near to beating Jason Fields of Malcolm Smith
Motorsports, the 125ce YZ Novice winner.
Second-place Billy Clifton, also riding for
Malcolm Smith Motorsports, was close enough
to be a Siamese twin but just couldn't quite get
there, and settled for second.

Second into the woods behind Andrew
Williams, Hess soon lost the position to Robbie
Deel when he took a wrong arrow and sent him
on a wrong trail. But by the third lap things
changed for Hess. Williams had dropped out
and Hess had made the pass, talc.ing first place.
After a total of six seven-mile laps, Hess finished
with the overall position, malc.ing it three for
three in the series so far this season.
The 200cc A class was taken by Tony
Lambert. On the second lap, Lambert's rival
Jimmy Hess had brake problems and was out
working on his bike. But by the third lap Hess
was piclc.ing up and landed the second-place finish.
Fourteen-year-old Daniel Morrison grabbed
the 200cc B class win. Morrison, who was mini
class champion last year, has really set his sights
on another title. He started one class behind his
father, but soon passed him.
George e;reer took first place in the 250cc A
class. A battle ensued between Greer and brothers Mike and Rid Romans. Greer was running
first overall by 30 seconds in the first two laps,
but soon slowed down and Ic.ept first place in the
class.

Bricker buries 'em at
Hills Ferry Short Tr;tck
By Mike Vancil
NEWMAN, CA, MAY 15
Kevin Brider had his 600cc Honda dialed in pel'fectly for the fast Hill Ferry Speedway short traclc.,
and he enhanced the setup of his machine with
his acute desire to excel. Together, that combination proved to be unbeatable as Bricker powered
to the win in the Open Expert final. Brider was
seeded into the first of two heat races and had to
battle for several laps with Perry Lang before settling into a smooth, uncontested ride to the
checlc.ered flag. Lang finished second, though he
was furiously challenged by Michelle DiSalvo on
a converted Honda CR500 M)(er.
The second heat saw Lonnie Pauley score the
win with relative ease. Jesse Sanchez finished
. second, while Woodie Rogers nabbed third.
Bricker charged hard off the line at the start
of the 15-lap final, but Pauley was in hot pursuit.
Pauley would catch Briclc.er on the bad straight,
but he couldn't match Bricker's comer speed
through turns three and four. At the mid-point
of the race, Pauley fought for control in turn
four and nearly went down, and that was all
Bricker needed to slip away.
Meanwhile, a fierce battle was going on for
third between Wallace, Sanchez and Rogers. It
was Rogers who had the better setup and
motored past the rest. Rogers passed Wallace,
then Sanchez to nab third.
In the Open Novice class final, Sammy
Sabedra zipped into the lead after initial leader
Mike Gallaty faded off the pace. Sabedra only
had to concentrate on his own riding. as he was
never again challenged after Gallaty's demise.
Gallaty held onto finish second, despite a laterace attaclc. by Keith Watts.

PERRl5VALLEY,CA, MAY16
Tyson Taylor put in two outstanding rides to
come from behind and take the 80cc Novice
class win in round two of Califomia Racing
Club's Dunestown Series at StarWest Supercross
Parlc..
When the gate dropped signaling the start of
the first moto it was Christopher GosseIaar with
the holeshot with Clint Shepard riding his dust
trail. Taylor rounded the turn in third with Chris
Honnold holding off the charges of Levi Reid
and Bob Alc.ens.
As the riderS sorted themselves out on the
first lap, lead changes were occurring in almost
every comer of the course. Shepard made his
bid for the lead over one of the smaller doubles
leading up to the King Kong launcher double
jump. Shepard's time in the limelight was shortlived as he dropped his Yamaha in the Snake
Pit. He was up quiclc.ly and managed to keep the
motor on his YZ running. but the damage was
done as Gosselaar was back into the lead.
On the next lap Shepard dove under
Gosselaar and back into the lead only to have
Taylor sweep under both of them on the next
comer. This caught both of the them off guard
and Gosselaar, recovering first, took advantage
of the situation and rode past Shepard and into
second.
Once out front Taylor opened up some
breathing room and when he rounded the corner leading up to the Twin Pealc.s, a 4O-foot double, there was no backing off and the North
County Yamaha rider cleared the jump, leaving
his adversaries way behind.
The action was far from over as Gosselaar
was to fan victim to the Snalc.e Pit, a winding 5turn that IS preceded by a step-down jump.
Shepard was back to second, this time to stay, as
the moto was winding down. After a couple of
clean passes over the Twin Peaks double the
checkered came out and Taylor slc.ied the tabletop for the win. Shepard was the next rider past
the finish line and Reid followed him home in
the number-three position. Rounding out the
top five were Gosselaar and Akens.
Gosselaar was primed and ready at the start
for moto two and grabbed the holeshot while
Taylor got caught by the gate and was in last.
Honnold rounded the first tum in second with
Shepard and Akens hot on his tail.
Honnold got crossed up and this allowed
Shepard to move into second as Taylor was on
the gas and closing fast. Taylor had worlc.ed his
way up into fourth, and then almost passed both
Honnold and Shepard in the same corner.
Shepard then handed Taylor second, when he
went down in the Snalc.e Pit, but the leader was
still in the distance. Gosselaar wasn't waiting for
Taylor and was on the gas, but Taylor was maIc.ing up time on every lap as he doubled the Twin
Pealc.sjump.
At the three-quarter mark Taylor had closed
the gap and then doubled his way into the lead
as the pair went over a small double just before
the Twin Pealc.s jump, which enabled Taylor to
ehnunate any chance of Gosselaar getting bacIc.
by.
The action behind the pair was just as
intense as Reid and Shepard were going bad
and forth for a couple of laps before Shepard
exploded the rear wheel on his Yamaha. This left
the door open for Reid.
Reid was unable to malc.e up any ground on
Gosselaar as he had lost the silencer on his YZ.
Everyone stayed in place en route to the checkered with Honnold and Alc.ens rounding out the
five.
When the results were finally posted it was
Taylor with a double-moto win over Gosse!aar's
4-2.
