Travis ,Pastrana Kevin Wmdham (511) scored three overall class wins at Muddy Creele Raceway MX. Windham rages at Muddy Creek Motocross By Loren and Barbara Williams BLOUNrVILLE,1N, MAY 22 awasaki Team Green's Kevin Windham recorded three class wins at the Suzuki Eastern Continental MX Championships at Muddy Creek Raceway. Windham took home gold in the Schoolboy, and 12Scc and 250cc B classes. The event, which was also the seventh round of the Mega Series, drew nearly 450 riders from 17 states, and the top-five . finishers in the amateur classes scored contingency awards from Motul, Gear Racewear, Hammerhead Graphics, Scott . USA, Oury and GatorZ. On Saturday, the combined Schoolboy and Unlimited class opened the weekend's racing. Though Windham powered to the front of the Schoolboy ranks, the race turned out to be anything but a runaway. Streaking along ahead of Jarrett Tipping, Brian Thornburg, Scott Graves, Jimmy Briggs, Shae Bentley, Charlie Dunaway and the rest, Windham slid out in a turn, losing several positions. But he remounted and began his drive back to the front. A lap later, Tipping, who had inherited the lead, was feeling the pressure by a fast-c1osing Windham. A few turns later, Windham regained the lead and held on for the win ahead of Graves, Tipping, Briggs and Bentley. Windham nailed the holeshot and pulled away in the second Schoolboy mota, while ripping, Briggs, Thornburg and Bentley mixed it up behind the leader. When it was all over, Windham had scored his second mota victory, ahead of Tipping, Briggs, Thornburg and Bentley. Both 125cc B motos were owned by Windham, as well. The 15-year-old especially proved his dominance by scoring the win in Sunday's second moto by 25 seconds over Paul Currie. Second overall went to Currie with a 3-2 tally, while third overall went to Tipping with 4-3 mota finishes. After easily winning Saturday's first 250cc B mota, Windham came back for Sunday's deciding second moto and, like he had done the previous day, smoked everyone for the overall win. A third and a second gave Ray Mitchell the runnerup honors, while a 2-3 earned Horton third overall Mike Brown, on his Jim's M.C. Sales/Pro-Circuit / Answer /Bell / Hammerhead-backed Honda, easily handled the 12Scc A division with doublemota wins, leaving Team Green's Jim Neese, Suzuki pilots Stevie Childress, K 26 Chad Lough and Nathan Ramsey, and Yamaha-mounted Kevin Walker to scrap over the remaining top-five slots. In the end it was Neese claiming second, followed by Childress, Lough and Ramsey. Brown pulled his customary holeshot in the first 250cc A mota, chased by Lough, Doug Stone, Billy Cox, Damien Plotts, Neese, and the rest of the 18strong field. Neese, however, bared down and got busy passing riders en route to the front of the pack. He quickly got around Plotts and Cox, but ran into difficulty getting around Stone. For more than two laps of the eight-lap mota, Neese looked for an opening. During that time Plotts had moved around Cox and caught Neese. A lap later, the two traded places a couple of times until Neese passed Plotts for good. Stone, meanwhile, wouldn't budge. Finally NeeSe held the gas on longer and outbraked Stone to make the pass. Neese climbed as high as second, before dropping back to fourth by the finish. At the end it was Brown taking the win ahead of Lough, Stone, Neese and Plotts. Brown led the way at the start of the second moto, only to crash later on and hand the mota win to Neese. Brown recovered from his hard fall to finish second which was good enough to score the overall victory. "The bike bottomed out at the top of the staircase," said Brown of his crash. ~'Then it jumped straight up and nosedived." Stone recorded another third-place finish which gave him third overall, while Lough finished fourth for fourth overall. Rounding out the top five was Childress. Doug Harvey was the early leader in the first 250cc C mota before crashing and dropping back to fifth. Inheriting the lead was Jeremy West. Harvey came back, however, and passed West late in the race to score the moto win. West finished second. In the second mota, Kevin Dobbs grabbed the holeshot but was quickly relegated to third after getting passed by Furman Parton and Marcus York. After a mediocre start, West worked his way up through the pack to finish second to Parton. West's 2-2 mota finishes was more than enough to score the overall win over runner-up Harvey, who could finish no higher than third in the second mota. Dale Woody, Dobbs and Parton rounded out the top five. Vet A contender Kip Bigelow, who went home with number-one trophies in both the 25 and 30+ A classes at the series opener in March, had his hands full with his brother Kreg Bigelow, Ron Jones, Alan Andreu and Mike Andrews. Emig eats 'em up at Perris MX _ By Tony Alessi PERRIS, CA, MAY 22 Defending 12Scc National Champion Jeff Emig rode his practice Yamaha YZI25 to the win in the combined Pro class at GFI's Super Saturday MX, held at Perris Raceway. In the first 2O-1ap moto, Emig started poorly and ran well outside the top five while Thor's Buddy Antunez and O'Neal·backed Brian Manley battled for the lead. Emig began to pick up the pace and began to challenge for a top-five position. First, Emig sailed past Joe Schmoe Graphics·sponsored Mike Metzger for fourth, then he zapped NCY's Donald Upton for third. Emig then set out after Manley, but he had a harder time passing the veteran. Manley kept Emig at bay for six laps, until Emig found a faster line and jumped to the inside of Manley. With 10 laps down and 10 to go, Emig began to hunt down Antunez, who enjoyed a seven· second lead. By lap 15, Emig had closed the gap and began to hound Antunez for the lead. Emig used the same section of the track to pass Antunez, and the pass was so close that Emig's rear tire made contact with Antunez's front wheel. Emig waved apologetically to Antunez before leaVing him in the dust. Antunez held onto second ahead of Manley. The second moto saw Metzger grab the holeshot ahead of Antunez, Upton and Emig. Emig was 'On fire, and quickly roosted into the lead. Enig would have company, though, as Antunez stayed close for the first 10 laps. In the second half of the race, Emig's extreme physical conditioning began to shine and he pulled out a 16-second lead over the tiring Antunez. Emig won going away, while Antunez barely held off Upton at the finish for second. Larry Camomile was the king of the Novice classes, as he swept all four motos in the 125cc Novice and 25-29 year-old Novice classes. Camomile topped David Hughes and Chris Packwood in the 12Scc Novice class, and edged Yamaha's Paul Kellen and Jay Pavlovec in the 25-29 division. Results P/W BEG DlV t~ 1. Jeff McClure (Vam); 2.
