MX Kevin Hines (shown) tied for second overall with Randy Hawkins. and Hatch, as the two stayed close the entire race, with Smith winning and Josh Lojak finishing third. The fourth race featured the Open class racers, and it looked like a sure runaway for class-leading Team Green rider Mark Grossman. Yamaha-mounted Dave Santi had other ideas, though, and passed Grossman to capture the motowin. In the final moto of the day, Suzukimounted David Rhodes dominated all three laps to win by 25 seconds, but an intense battle over second between Tom Ebersole and Steve Chapkovi kept the crowd entertained. Chapkovi would eventually finish as the runner-up. "1 was very happy with my results, as you usually have to sacrifice so much when you ride a 125, particularly in the sandy conditions we had today," said Hoess. "I was riding the same bike that I competed on last year and at Tulsa, and I'll probably continue to ride it until Husqvarna introduces a 1994 125 over here." When the final scores were posted, Hines and Hawkins shared an equal number of trail points, which, per FIM rules, allowed the two riders to both be awarded with second place. "My day started getting interesting at the final special test in the sand pit," said Suzuki/MSR/Metzeler I Asicsl Answer I Pro Circuit/ Acerbis/Bieffe/Bel-Ray I Cycle Gear-sponsored Hawkins. '1 went into it feeling like I could do no wrong, but I went over a pile of rocks on one of those drop-aways and the bike kicked out sideways just as I went over one of those rocks. The bike just tumbled end over end un til it reached the bottom of the hill. The crash tore up my riding pants and tweaked my bars out of shape." Smith was third overall ahead of teammate Hatch, and Doug Deaton finished in fifth. (lV Results 01A: J. Fred Hoess (HUB); 2. (TIE) Randy Hawkins (Suz)/Kevin Hines (Hus); 3. Rodney Smith (Suz); 4.
