Brandes gave all, but Walters was slightly ahead at the finish. Tirheimer, Vohland and McElroy rounded out the top five. Tempers flared when officials assessed Walters a one-position penalty for an earlier infraction, handing first to Brandes. Despite protests, the officials stood firm, and the decision remained. In the second 125ee molo, Lowell Moural Jr. timed the start perfectly and was chased in the early going by Tltheirner, Walters and VohJand. Moural enjoyed a slight lead at the end of the first lap. Unobstructed by traffic, Moural used every inch of the track and his hot lines allowed him to pull away from the dicing pack. Suddenly, Moural took a tumble in a back-section tum: ""The front end just slipped out from underneath me and down I went; it really wasn't much of a fall, but it took me a few laps to get back 10 speed," explained Moural. With Moural down, Tirhcimer moved into the lead. Walters and Brandes were battling again with Vohland staying close, but out of harm's way. On lap three Walters suddenly shook loose from Brandes, tore past Tirheimer and took over the lead. Moments later, Brandes also got around Tirheimer. Once again, Walters and Brandes fought tooth and nail, lap after lap. The battle for the remaining top-10 position was equally intense with Tirheimer, Vohland, Hummel and Chris Barker the main players. By lap six Moural also moved close enough to challenge, but the top five positions remained fixed on the last lap, though the racing was very close. At the checkered nag, Walters took the win, eamIng him first overall despite the earlier penalty. Brandes, Tirheimer, Vohland and Hummel crossed the line next, in that order. In the 250cc Pro class Stone-Age Racingsponsored Tirheimer was the quickest rider at the gate - too quick, it turned out, as he was penalized one lap for jumping the gate. Behind Tirheimer the battle through the first turn was between Trevor Meagher, Brandes, Walters, Sven Stillmock and Derek Watkins. Out front, Tirheimer charged, unaware or unconcerned with his one-lap-down status. As the lop riders entered the 6nish line rockers to complete the first lap, the race was extremely close. Meagher, Moural and Watkins showed great form in this section, gaining time on what was arguably the hot line. Meagher spilled in the west comer, rejoining the race back in 15th place, and could advance no further than ninth by moto's end. At the halfway signal Tirheimer was still leading but Walters had moved to second and was closing fast Brandes looked comfortable in third, but fourth-place Stillmock was under allack by MouraJ. Stillmock appeared to tire somewhat and both Moural and Barker slipped by on lap five. Shortly after the leaders notched their sixth lap, Walter. went under Tirheimer in a highbermed turn, and for a moment both of their Suzukis tried to occupy the same space. Somehow the two stayed upright and Walters bounced by and into the lead. Next Brandes made an aggressive pass on Tirheimer, dispatching him to third. Actually, both of these highrisk passes were unnecessary because of Tirheimer's actual position. On the eighth and final lap, Walters reached the nag first, followed by Brandes, Tirheimer, Moural and Barker. The official tally was a bit different, with Moural earning third and Tirheirner 15th. The close racing continued in moto two. This time, Brandes got the holeshot, with Walters, Tirheimer, Moura! and Watkins also leading the early charge. The track had become extremely rough by this point, but lap times were nonetheless down. Slowly but surely, Brandes and Walters distanced themselves from the field. By mid race the top two were ahead by a quarterlap. The lead positions remained unchanged until lap six when Vohland made a slick pass on Moural 10 take over fourth. As they entered the final lap, the fireworks were still flying, as Brandes and Walters continued with "full contact" racing: On the far east comer of the track, the Suzuki pilots collided hard, falling with considerable momentum. The intense competition had obviously drained both riders of energy and they struggled to remount Fortunately for Brandes and Walters, they had built such a lead that the race was basically between the two of them, with third quite a ways behind. Walters was the first to recover, and sped down the final straight towards the last turn. Brandes gave chase right to the last second, but Walters won again. Brandes scored a hard-earned second with Moural third overall with his consistent 3-5 mota tally. Results 500 PRO: 1. Dustin Bloomfield (Hon); 2. Kevin Andenon (H..); 3. l.on. I.
