eEVENTS I Over 150 vintage MX racers did battle on Tulare Cycle Park's well-prepared track. Promoter Steve Monger got out of the water truck and donned his leathers to compete in the +30 Expert division, giving the spectators one of the best shows of the day. In the Hrst race, he and initial leader Ed Ho and his Maico traded the lead numerous times until Monger finally got the upper hand and the mota win. The second moto saw Ho build up a big lead while Monger struggled with traffic after a slow start. Once into second place, Monger started slicing away at Ho's advantage, finally getting within striking distance on the final circuit. Monger got a wheel beside the leader a few times. but couldn't make the pass. Then, exiting the final tum, Ho slowed just a few feet before the finish line, allowing Monger the room needed to nip the victory by a wheel length. John Figas topped the 125cc Novice class after posting a 1-3 score. The Vamaha rider was able to win race one over Armen Clawson's Tulare Kawasaki-Suzuki KXI25 and the Rickman Zundapp of John Gulliford. Moto two had Greg Kendrick - who destroyed his Bultaco's rear brake in the 6rst moto - take the win ahead of Gulliford and Figas; Oawson fol] in the first tum and was unable to make up the distance. The overall tally read Figas, Gulliford andOawson. Results Resullll Billy Cox (Ill), Jamie Frazier (898) and Nathan Ramsey (387) diced at Pro Sport MX. riders earned MegaSeries-scale payoffs. Pro Sport track manager Tam Topham agreed that the perfect weather may have had something to do with the turnout. "It's a lot more pleasant today than last year's opening race, when it snowed, then sleeted, then rained," said Topham. In the first round of 125cc A class action, Nutter gated second to Kevin Walker's holeshot. Though Nutter pressured for the first part of the race, Walker twisted the throttle a little harder and stretched out an advantage of up to eight seconds on Nutter. Robert McWhorter sat in third for most of the moto, but Richard Prather won the drag race for third to the checkered flag, leaving McWhorter in fourth and Mike Eastwood to round out the top five. Walker and Nutter blasted into the sweeping first tum side by side on the second-round start. Over the doubles they were still bar-t<>-bar, but Walker was brought to an abrupt \lalt in the very next tum. Taking the inside line of the hairpin, Walker injured his left foot when putting it down in a comer. Nutter sailed past into the clear, and cruised to the win, followed by Nathan Ramsey, McWhorter, Tres Bruce and Eastwood. The placings between motos of the 125ee A class fluctuated wildly, with only Eastwood finishing in the same spot twice. Ramsey's Suzuki seized in the first moto. Nutter won the overall with a 2-1 tally. Kirkbride (Hon); 4. Bryan Davis (Hon); 5. Frizby Staley (Hon). 125 EX: 1. Brock Suter (C·A); 2 Scott o.vi:s (Hon); 3. Mike UUevlg (Han). 2SO NOV: I. Silva came out of the right hander a little too hot and laid his bike down. Jorgensen went'on to take the win with Raggio getting thj! win in the B portion of the race. The 80cc C race was close with first place up for grabs between Craig Gonzales, who got the hofeshot off the line, and Dusty Mendoza, who was right behind. The pair diced it out through the whoJe race with each rider having their favorite spot on the track to try a pass. Gonzales lead the race until the white-flag lap, with Mendoza trying moves on the outside of tum one and Gonzales getting him back at the tree tum until coming off the final jump on the last lap, when the two drag raced to the cheekered flag with Mendoza getting the nod. MX racer Monty Ownbey tried his hand in the combined 250cc BIC class and went fast enough to take second place, with the win going to IT rider Herbert Callen. Short track Specialist Shawn Russell also turned in a good ride as he piloted his Kawasaki to a third-place finish. Davis Winters was the winner in the Crace, with Ben Meyer working his way up from back' in the pack to a second-place finish. Open Expert class racing this year has been providing race fans with action worth more than the price of admission and tonight was no different. Joe Pineda wasted no time jumping into the lead at the start of the race and just as quickly dropped from first to fifth. Greg Miller took over the lead and immediately began distancing himsell from the rest of the field. Danny Hart held down second with Rob Damron riding an oldbut-fast Champion-framed YZ490 in third. Eric Bostrom who had gotten a poor start had worked up to filth place. Miller continued to sretch out his lead as Hart and Damron were bumping and shoving each other through the infield in their battle for second. By the fourth lap Bostrom had joined Hart and Damron in the fight for second. Bostrom, who was riding a slightly different line around the track, passed Damron as they headed for the second jump, and then set his sights on Hart, who was also gaining ground on the leading Miller. By the eighth lap Bostrom made a darinll pass to get by Hart in the same place he had passed Damron. 125 NOV: I. John Flgu (Yam); 2. Jotln Gulliford (Ric); 3. Annlen OaW1Otl (Kaw); 4. Ed Gatlin, on a 74 Honda Elsinore, scored a perfect four·out--of·four moto wins score en route to secuIing first place in the Vintage Masters and Super Vintage (air-cooled, drum brakes) classes. Moto one of tlie Masters class saw Kim Burrows snag the holeshot on a Maico, followed by Gadin, Maic<>-mounted Peler Villacaro and Joel Nicholson on a '74 Vamaha VZ250. By lap three, Gatlin had secured the lead for good, relegating Burrows to second, where he remained until the last lap when a crash knocked his carburetor off and allowed Villacaro into second. Nicholson and a hard-charging Honda-mounted Matt KretscIuner were third and fourth, respectively. In the second moto, Gatlin was able to put his Honda into the lead at the start and was
