· The rugged Hungarian track, which features a couple of savage downhills, was not so kind to Belgian Stefan Everts and South Afiican Albertyn. Neither of Schmit's most serious rivals for the 1993 title completed the final moto. Everts had crashed heavily, fortunately without injury, on the opening lap, while Albertyn hurt his shoulder when he went down hard on a fast downhill halfway round lap two while trying to improve on 15th place. Albertyn now leads Schmit, 255-241, wi th Everts third on 218. Schmit emerged victorious from a tight battle with lone KTM factory star and fellow American Trampas Parker in race one, while Albertyn was 20 seconds back in third on the JHK Honda, safely ahead of the Bieffe Suzuki duo @f Bob Moore and Everts who had fought off a challenge from AW/Johnson Kawasaki star Billy Liles. Kurt Nicoll was initially credited with 27th, but after a protest it was accepted that he had finished 8th on the same lap as the winner, sandwiched between Castro! Honda teammate Rob Herring and Swede Peter Johansson in a tight finish. Schmit won the second race by nearly 10 seconds over Moore and Parker with the entire leaderboard well split up by the checkered flag. Seventh place was to prove enough to secure second on the day for Parker as Moore had been eliminated in a multiple crash at the start. Schmit was still not able to relax, however, as he was chased all the way by Tallon Vohland. Earlier 10th and 11th placings combined with the runner-up spot gave the Carpi Suzuki rider sixth overall behind Herring, Nipoll and Moore. Liles made it five Americans in the top nine overall, as only Bader Manneh of the U.S. contingent continues to struggle, having scored just three points thus far in the series. The top 15 riders at the halfway point in the series (the ninth round in Belgium next month) will receive increased travel allowances as negotiated by the FIM and paid for by a levy on European organizers in order to bring them to the U.S. GP at Budds Creek in Maryland in July. The list currently includes five Americans, three Belgians, two Englishmen, two Italians and single riders from South Africa, Sweden and Holland. 0' GRAND NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP '9 3 PLUS••• .883 NATIONAL MIll SANCTiONED Results MOTO 1: 1.
