eDIRT TRACK Series: Round 4. of race-favorite Hale. Graham and Springsteen entertained themselves by waving to one another down the back straight, even though their race for the lead was intense. "My bike had top end on Ricky, but I think he was geared a little lower than I was," said Springsteen. "He had more grunt out of the turns than I did, so he could cut a lower line." The extra "grunt" that Graham's bike had proved to be the difference, as he dove under Springsteen in the final turns on the final lap and out-powered him in the dash for the finish line. Graham and Springsteen crossed the finish line in close formation, over a full straight ahead of Moroney's H-D's Fletcher, Bartels' rider Hale and Steelmaster's Harley's Estep. "I lost my brakes with five laps to go," said Graham, who earned $1000. "I had to really start flicking it in after that. What a great race, I had to ride my hardest the whole time." 01 ~ ('f) 0\ 0\ ~ Results Ricky Graham (3) and Rich King (80) got the jump off the line at the start of the $10,000 Camel Challenge. (Left to right) Springsteen, Parker and Graham celebrated after the Camel Challenge. 8 Morehead picked up where he left off at the restart and led Roeder, Graham, Parker and ·Carr. Morehead enjoyed the lead for three laps before Graham took over down low in turn three, but would drop to fourth on the next two laps when Parker and Carr also motored past. During laps four through nine, Graham, Carr and Parker rode as if they were following a script: Graham up high, Carr down low and Parker trying both. Carr finally made the low line work in turns one and two on the 10th lap, and he barely edged Graham in their race down the back straight. "I had found my line during the Camel Challenge," said Carr. "We also made a gearing change that worked good and I knew that the race would come to us." Parker also passed Graham on the 15th lap, and with that it looked to be a Carr IParker battle to the end. Graham dropped back about five bike lengths, but still enjoyed a full straightaway lead over Morehead, Springsteen and Roeder, who battled over fourth. "We can't get away from each other," said Morehead of his battles with Springsteen. "We went to Spain last week and banged bars, and now we're back in the U.s. doing the same thing." Parker made a brief bid for the lead on lap 18 when he momentarily passed Carr, but the champ quickly struck back and reclaimed the point. When the five lap signal came out, Graham suddenly began to speed up and closed back up to Parker's rear wheel, and surprised him with a pass on the 23rd lap. "I knew Ricky was back there, but I didn't know he was that close," said Parker. "I didn't plan on having to race with him too." Graham carried his momentum down the back straight and actually passed Carr at one point, but Carr's low line proved to be too fast and he held the lead. Just after taking the white flag, Graham hit the bumps going into one and swapped a bit, allowing Parker to sneak past on the smoother outside line. With that, the finishing order was set and Carr greeted the checkered flag with a 10 bike length advantage over Parker and Graham. "Those guys were riding up high and low, trying all kinds of stuff," said Carr. "I don't think I took a different line through the whole race." "You had to really stay in line out of the corners," said Parker. "The track really started to break up. It was bad." Some distance behind the lead pack, Morehead, Springsteen and Roeder finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, separated by only a few inches, while Hale, Farris, King and Hill rounded out the top 10. 883 National No one was surprised to see heat winners Springsteen and Graham jump out into the top two spots at the start of the $5000 883 National, and no one was surprised to see the two former Grand· National Champions pull far away from the field. Throughout the 12-lap race, Bartels' Harley-Davidson's Springsteen and T Room-backed Graham traded the lead repeatedly, so often, in fact, that the crowd's attention was almost completely drawn away from third-place Fletcher, who ran all alone, well ahead TIME TRIALS: 1.
