Schwartz wins Speedway USA opener By Tom Thomas Photo by Darrald Bennett VICI'ORVllU, CA. MAY 1 Speedway USA kicked off its 1993 season in front of a seU-out crowd Saturday night at the Gene Woods-operated facility located in the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds. The ticket line. reminiscent of a Guns and Roses concert, stretched across the fairgrounds' parking lot, as fans anticipated seeing local hero Chris Manchester display the style that won him last year's National Speedway Championship. Manchester lined up for the Scratch semi alongside veterans Schwartz, Mike Faria and 1991 Rookie of the Year John Aden. At the start, Manchester broke the tape and Referee Danny HuU made the unpopular, but justified, call to disqualify the number one plate holder which relegated Manchester to the Scratch consolation race. Schwartz held off Faria and the two veterans advanced to the main. In the feature, Schwartz turned in a brilliant ride, edging out Steve Lucero, Faria and Charlie Venegas to take the opening night win. In the Scratch consolation race, Manchester bested last yea,'s second place points finisher Scotty Brant, with Aden a close third. Sixteen-year-old Angela Hale made her debut in the Support class 'at Speedway USA. She won her five-lap heat race and then finished a respectable third behind Rick Faron and Rick Pot in the Support main. Andy Northrop came off the 3O-yard line to win the Handicap main over Aden and Brent Werner. Keeney, Cunningham double at Millville Motocross By George Hodkinson MILLVllU, MN, APR. 25 Cory Keeney and Lance Cunningham scored double-class wins at Johnny Martin's Spring Creek Motocross Park. Keeney won both the 125 and 250cc A classes, while Cunningham topped both the Youth and 125cc B classes. The event was the first race of the 1993 season at the Spring Creek, and Ryan Broughton showed that he was ready to race by grabbing the holeshot in the Youth class, and he was pursued by Aaron Pape, Shawn Wehlage and Cunningham. By the end of the first lap Wehlage had moved into the lead followed by Cunningham and Broughton. The rest of the moto Cunningham and Wehlage swapped positions for the lead in an intense battle. Cunningham went on to win the moto with Wehlage righl behind. In the second moto, Cunningham jammed into the early lead ahead of Dustin Noble and Cory Smoluch, while Wehlage was found back in the pack. As Wehlage moved through the field to challenge the &ont-runners, he pulled off the track because of problems and retired for the day. CUnningham won the moto, 15 seconds clear of Pape.
