ond-place finishes, Hamer clinched the overall over Elliot. In the IT, Yamamoto qualified fastest with a time of 24.669 seconds on the rough, dusty track. Rains over the last week had washed away the surface Qf the course, and then the dry Idaho wind had whipped away any remaining moisture. Going into turns one and two, the top of the track had become as slick as glass, with holes forming at the end of two. A ripple formed in the sweeper at the bottom of the track, forcing riders to be careful in their acceleration onto the start straight. Fay pulled secondfastest time with a 24.809 over Shane Butchart, Jeff Harsha and Ricky Henson. Ron Yamamoto and Fay won both of their heats, with Dan Stanley and Henson pulling seconds, and Russ Yamamoto and Jeff Russell taking thirds. The trophy dash featured Fay bouncing out into the lead, only to lose control in the sweeper, and spend the rest of the dash as a spectator as Ron Yamamoto won over Harsha and Butchart. In the main, Ron Yamamoto read the green light perfectly and slid into turn one ahead of' Stanley, Russell, Scott McPherson, Russ Yamamoto and Harsha. Fay ate dirt back in seventh, ahead of Ricky Henson, who also got trapped in the starting traffic. Within a couple of laps, though, Fay aggressively railed by everyone up to third. By this time, Yamamoto and Stanley had pulled ahead. Stanley . attempted to get past Yamamoto, but without result. Halfway through, Xamamoto held a small three-second cushion on Stanley, who was keeping Fay outside of striking distance. "1 knew that I wasn't catching Ron," related Stanley, "But that if I stayed ahead of Mickey I'd keep up with him." Now in fourth, Russell led the pack of Russ Yamamoto, McPherson, Harsha and Henson. Yamamoto held his lead to the finish, with Stanley and Fay sliding in a couple seconds behind. Russell retained his position at the head of the pack over Harsha and Henson. "It was a tough track," explained Russell, "And Yamamoto is still hard to beat. We don't have much of a hometown advantage here since we never race on this track."
