Frampton's past record has been that of an environmental promoter who opposes off-road recreation, and the AMA opposes him. If elected to the position, he would control the policies for the National Park Service, Fish and Wildlife Service and the Land and Water Conservation Fund. Though the vote will not likely take place the day of Frampton's appearance, it is important that readers voice their concerns as to his past record. To do so, write Senator J. Off-road legend Malcolm Smith recently called Papa to inform him that his Riverside, California, shop, Malcolm Smith Motorsports, had purchased Riverside Suzuki, and will now carry the entire line of Suzuki motorcycles and Bombardier Sea-Doo watercraft, in addition to the Yamaha motorcycles and watercraft and KTM and Husqvarna dirt bikes that they already carried. Scott Summers, the defending AMA Grand National Cross Country Champion, sat out the last round of the series at Boyers, Pennsylvania, May 2, in order to let a neck injury heal. Summers pulled a muscle and a ligament in his neck in a crash that occurred at the previous ;:ound at Sharpsburg, Maryland, April 18. He is expected to ride the next GNCC round in Brownsville, Pennsylv!ffiia, May 16. In addition to three used dual sport bikes, Team Honda MX T-shirts, Cycle News T-shirts and copies of the May issue of Rider magazine that features Jay Leno on the cover will be raffled off at the gathering of motorcyclists that will be held at Red Mountain, California, over the Memorial Day weekend. Funds raised by the raffle will help the runoff election campaign of Pat Owens, who is fighting to retain his seat on the Los Angeles Community College board of trustees. Acerbis Adventure, organizers of the Nevada Rally, have made arrangements for a hotel-food package to be available for riders, support people and spectators attending the competition this August. Hotels will be the finest available in each town that the rally visits, including the Excalibur in Las Vegas, and all meals will be buffet-style and scheduled around the rally's unique time schedule. Government safety representatives as well as organizations representing law enforcement, the insurance industry, and highway safety interests testified against repeal. Trials legend Mick Andrews will compete in the July 24-25 AHRMA National Vintage Trial at northern California's Donner Ski Ranch. If you plan on attending the AMA National Championship Road Race Series round at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, or the H.O.G./Harley-Davidson extravaganza in Milwaukee over the July 11-13 weekend, you'll have a chance to see some good 01' American-as-apple-pie dirt track racing. On Friday evening, July 11, J&P Promotions will hold a short track race at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, Wisconsin, which is just five minutes south of Road America and one hour north of Milwaukee. Both Pro and Amateur class racing will be conducted with a total of $2000 up for grabs in the four Pro classes. For more information, call 319/462-6011. Republican Representative Olympia Snowe of Maine and Democrat Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell of Colorado, testified before the Surface Transportation Subcommittee of the House Committee on Public Works on May 4 that rider education and driver awareness are more important keys to motorcycle safety than mandatory helmet laws. The subcommittee was holding the hearings to review implementation of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (lSTEA) of 1991. Section 153 of the ISTEA requires states to pass mandatory motorcycle helmet and automobile seat belt laws by October of this year. If a state fails to comply, it would be ineligible for special grants and face mandatory redirection of funds from highway construction to safety education. Representative Snowe has introduced legislation (H.R. 799) to repeal Section 153 while Sena10r Campbell has authored a bill (S. 401) to postpone its effective dates. Speaking of GP motocross, none of the overall top seven riders at the May 9 World Championship 250cc MX Series round in South Africa hail from Europe. Rob Herring who finished fourth competes under a Great Britain license but is a native of South Africa. The top-finishing rider from Europe was Belgian Stefan Everts, who finished eighth. For your information, the top seven finishers were Americans Donny Schmit and Trampas Parker, South African Greg Albertyn, Herring and Americans Bob Moore, Tallon Vohland and Billy Liles. Charles and Mary Ellen Cooper, the parents of motocrosser Guy Cooper, are well on their way down the road to recovery after being involved in an auto accident in February 1992. "They're both doing great," said Guy Cooper, the 1990 125cc MX National Champion. "My dad, who had his leg the femur bone - fused to his hip, is actually riding a motorcycle again; I had to lower the suspension on a Suzuki DR250S, and he has to leap-frog from behind to get on. My mom is coming along well, too. She can now walk with a cane. Overall, their recovery is coming along well."
