APR. 18 Jeff Brindle blasted the 600cc Intermediate class on the oval to score the win at Bakersfield Speedway's third round of the Central California ChampiOnship Spring Series. In heat race action, Pro rider Danny Ritchie was the early leader who went on to claim the win. Sid Payne, Jack Jones, Gary Williams and Douglas Lee rounded out the top five. As they say, "It 'ain't over till it's over." That was the story for the 600cc Intermediate feature. Brindle blasted off the line for the holeshot closely followed by Ritchie, who wasn't going to give him an inch. Williams powered into third, and Payne and Jones into fourth and fifth, respectively. By the second lap, Brindle held off Ritchie's back-straight charge, while Payne overtook third ahead of Jones and Jeff Marison. WiUiams experienced some problems, dropping him back to sixth. Brindle and Ritchie continued the dicing show much to the enjoyment of the spectators. Brindle held off the hard-eharging efforts of Ritchie to claim the win at the checkers. Payne claimed third, Jones fourth, and Marison fifth. Results OVAL P /W NON·SHIFT: ]. DUllln Shropshire; 2. Ruben MaLiquamero; 3. Austin PerldM.· 80: 1. Jmemyt Santoro; 1. Nick Buncher; 3. APR. 25 Cold temperatures and rain couldn't stop Bill Roberts, as he raced to a double-moto sweep of the 125cc B c1ass at Malvern MX Park. Rain was about the only thing to dampen Roberts' day, as he had a convincing, wire-to-win! romp in the second moto. Roberts took the lead at the start of moto one with Marty Ling and Jamie Martin in hot pursuit. Roberts moved out to a four-second lead while Ling and Martin diced for second. Martin jammed ahead of Ling on lap four and began to close slightly on Roberts. At the end of the race. Roberts enjoyed a small)ead over Martin, while Ling followed them home at a distance in third. Todd Marnin and Charlie Hiner rounded out the top five finishers. Despite the rain that poured steadily from the sky, Roberts grabbed the holeshot at the start of the second moto. Martin and Marnin, as well as Ling gave chase. Caution was the name of the game, as the track became rutted and slick. By mid-moto, Ling had passed Mamin and set out after Martin. Ling managed to work past Martin half a lap before the checkered flag and finished some distance behind Roberts. '1 hate mud," said Roberts. Mike Katin scored double-moto wins in the 250cc A class. Ty Myers and Vince Karnow chased Katin into turn one with Karnow pressuring Myers for second. On lap two, Kamow motored into second wth Myers holding a close third. As Katin pulled away from the pack, Myers continued to pound on Kamow's rear wheel. With two laps to go, Kamow and Myers tangled. Kamow found himself on the ground but remounted in time to finish third. Katin took a wire-Urwire win over Myers and Karnow. When the gate dropped in moto two, Katin was once again out front with Myers and Kamow in his shadow. As in mota one, Katin went on unchallenged throughout the eight-lap race. With the track getting muddier and muddier, Myers momentarily lost control of his Kawasaki and allowed Kamow to motor into second. Katin took the checkered flag with Karnow a distant second over Myers, Gallager and Easton in tow. Resullo P/W, 1. Derick EspmochJw); '- IkIan (Y...); 3. Shawn Klley (Yam); 4. Few classes had the same winner in both motos, and even fewer motos had '!he sam.e leader throughout. Spectators had to divide their time between the eventful racing and the festivities across the street where Honda had set up demo rides for off-road and street bikes and trials champ Ryan Young rode two exhibition sessions. The first 250cc Expert moto started with a first tum pile-up and Neil Woerner emerging in the lead. Woerner spent four laps in first as Brian Carroll was working his way to the front. Bruce Stratton and Mike Moore were formidable obstacles but they each gave up their positions to a charging Carroll. By lap five, Carroll was leading, Woerner had slipped back to second, and Moore and Stratton were holding down third and fourth, respectively. The positions stayed the same to the checkered flag. New challengers emerged in the lina1 250cc Expert moto as Andy Reck, Lee Rostein and Pete Jastremski held the top three spols in the opening laps. Fleck went down but managed to scramble back on his bike in time to hold onto the lead. Carroll entered the top three in lap four, and in the next two laps worked his way to the front by dropping Fleck to second. Carroll established a comfortable lead by moto's end with Fleck finishing second in the moto and in the overall standings. Rostein was the third man across the finish line, followed by Stratton and Jeff Yentzer. Competition was tough in the Open Expert class. Bob Burfield took off to an early lead in the first moto with Phil Carlin, Rostein and Carroll keeping the pressure on. Burfield lost the lead to Carroll in lap five when Carroll turned in a well executed pass. Carroll then took off, building a winning lead over runner-up Burfield. They finished a dis lance ahead of Rostein and Carlin. The final Open Expert moto saw Burfield pull the holeshot but Carroll quickly look the lead and led each and every one of the seven laps despite intense pressure from Rostein, who finished second after dropping Burfield to third. Carroll, naturally, was the overall winner, Rostein's 3-2 earned him second-overall and Burfield was third overall via his 2-3 tally. Jeff Yentzer failed to win either 125cc Expert moto but he garnered the overall victory via a 23 day. Bruce Stratton won the opening moto after taking over the lead spot from Yentzer in the third lap. Ty Wallace was third, Jim Mcilvaine fourth and Pele Jastremski fifth. Yenrzer grabbed the leac! from Dan Wilson during lap four of the finall25cc Expert moto, but he bobbled as he approached the finish line and Jastremski took advantage of his miscue and passed Yenrzer to score the win. Mcilvaine also got around Yentzer to finish second with Stratton finishing fourth. The overall results read: Yentzer (2-3), Stratton (1-4), Jastremslci (51), Mcilvaine (4-2) and Wilson (6-5). Donnie Krusinski grabbed the holeshot into turn one with Robert Lewis stuck to his rear wheel. As Lewis and Krusinski concentrated on each other, Nickens crept up on them in tum three. Before anyone could react, Nickens stuck his wheel in the door and zoomed past Lewis on the inside to grab the second spot. Next, Nickens scooted under I.ed by to chase Nickens. Lewis rocketed up on Nickens, almost touching him as they hung it oul through the comers, handlebarto-handlebar. Neither rider would give an inch,
