PRE-ENTRY FORM I immediately fell in love with the Suzuki's motor - it's snappy, powerful and just plain a blast to work with. And, not to mention, of course, it's also fast. Maybe not as fast as the Honda, but fast enough for me. I also enjoyed the hell out of it in the turns. Maybe it was the low seat height, but I couldn't help but run the RM into the turns deeper and harder than the other bikes, and, I think you'll agree, that there's nothing like executing the perfect berm-shot. I seemed to accomplish this more times on the Suzuki than the rest of the bikes combined. The Suzuki also handles well, has decent brakes and feels fairly stable. My only complaint was the Suzuki's fork. In fact, the first time I rode the bike, I downright hated it, and had to stop immediately to make adjustments. The front-end twitched badly, but after playing with the external compression damping adjustments, I got it to where it was tolerable, but still far from perfeet. If I was making a living from racing, however, I would have to reluctantly drive past my Suzuki dealership and continue down to my local Honda shop. The Honda CR12S is serious. It has the strongest motor of the bunch, it handles good and has decent suspension. And without much work, it could easily be made to be competitive on the National circuit. Living in California, most of my riding usually winds up on hard-packed ground, and the Honda, unfortunately, isn't at home on the hard stuff. The rear tire spins all over the place, trying to dig for traction. This gets awfully old after a while and tiresome. But on tacky ground, the Honda was hard to beat. The Kawasaki didn't do much for me, but I still think it's a very good motorcycle. Being slightly over six feet tall, I liked the Kawasaki's big layout and felt quite comfortable on the bike. The motor works well, too, but didn't rev as high as the Honda, and didn't seem to hit as hard as the Suzuki, either. It does, however, pull well off the bottom, much better than the rest. Overall, the Kawasaki doesn't have any outstanding features, nor does it do anything real bad, either. It's just a good solid motorcycle. If it wasn't for the motor, I'd probably pick the Yamaha over all the others. In my opinion, it out-handles the otner three bikes, and the suspension is better, too. The day we happened to record lap times was my first day riding any of the bikes, and after one familiarization lap on each bike, my times were documented, and much to my surprise, my quickest average lap time was on the Yamaha! A few hundredths of a second behind was the Suzuki, followed by the Kawasaki and then the Honda. Obviously, the Yamaha hooked up much better than the other bikes, especially the Honda, on the hard-packed and slick ground that we tested on that day, and it is, at least for me, the easiest to adapt to. I have no doubt, however, roles would've been reversed, at least between the Yamaha and Honda, on a loamy or tacky surface: Despite what the stopwatches revealed, as a whole, I still liked the Suzuki best. I just found myself wanting to ride the RM more than the others, unable to get enough of that powerful motor. .
