AMA 250cc Grand Prix Series: Round 4 sleeve for the final lap. Charging into the first of the two chicanes, D'Aluisio moved past Ienatsch and held down third to the flag. "There's no touching Jimmy right now," said D'Aluisio, who rode a Bruce Maus-tuned Yamaha TZ250. "He jumped out front and didn't want anything to do with us. Racing with Nick (Ienatsch) was fun, he's a fun guy to ride with." As usual, Filice was all smiles following the race, and thanked everyone from Wayne Rainey to team manager Bubba Shobert, to his wife and family: "It feels good," he said. "I wouldn't be here without Wayne and Wayne Rainey Racing and Otsuka. Ed's (Toomey) done an awesome job with the bike. My only problems were when the tires started going off. I got into a couple of tankslappers and had to take it easy. I just start- ROAD RACE e ~ ed letting off the brakes sooner and started rolling through the comers a little more. One time the lead got down to plus one (second), and I had to put my head down and get it back to two seconds." Behind Ienatsch, Walker has a relatively lonely ride on his overheating Yamaha to finish fifth with Cornwell and the McBride's Cycle Rider Club Yamaha also a lonely pairing in sixth. Michael Barnes, who had been dicing with Walker early, was highsided from his Yamaha exiting the horseshoe on the sixth lap. (N Results 250cc QUALIFYING: 1. Rich Oliver (U2.876); 2. Harley-Davidson TwinSport Series: Round 4 Zampach zeroes in at Charlotte By Paul Carruthers Photo by George Roberts CHARWITE, NC, MAY 2 o Mike Hale. No problems for Scott Zampach. The King of Harley-Davidson TwinSport racing returned to his throne in Hale's absence, winning his first race of the season at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Hale, the point leader going into the fourth round of the series in Charlotte, was a no-show as he was off competing in the AMA Grand National Championship Series in Sacramento, California, iUld that left things pretty much to Zampach. The defending class champion raced with Shawn Higbee and Chuck Blackmon early on before pulling away to a convincing win in the red-flag shortened race. Higbee and Blackmon finished second and third, respectively, with Andy Fenwick and Chuck Downie rounding out the top five finishers. Higbee's second place was good enough to move him into the series points lead with 122 points, just two clear of the charging Zampach's 120. Blackmon moved to third in the standings with 105 points, five clear of Jeff Heino, sixth in Charlotte, and seven ahead of the absent Hale. The race was red-flagged on the eighth of 12 scheduled laps when Bartels' Harley-Davidson's Nigel Gale crashed in the Kitchen Sink area of the N race track, requiring an ambulance to pull on to the outside of the comer and presenting a danger to the rest of the field. Blackmon led the way into the first comer to start the race, followed closely by Heino, Zampach and Higbee. By the end of the first lap, Zampach had moved into second place behind Blackmon. A lap later he was leading the way and he wouldn't be caught. And all this without a shift lever. "It was pretty exciting," Zampach said. "Blackmon hit a cone in the chicane and a cone and 2x4 nailed me and took my shift lever off. I'm a professional road racer and I've been doing this a long time. I wasn't going to let a little adversity get to me. I'm not going to lose this number one plate without a fight." The opening lap also saw Richard Koehler crash his Suburban Motors Harley heading on to the banking, but fortunately he and the bike slid out of the way and the pack went by without incident. Higbee and his H-D of Jamestown entry were able to get by Blackmon and the Low Country Harley-Davidsonbacked 883 Sportster on the third lap. From there until the red-flag, the top three positions would remain unchanged. Meanwhile, Heino, Downie, Fenwick and Gale were engaged i.t\ a tussle over fourth place when Gale crashed on the eighth lap. That brought out the red-flag, giving fourth through sixth to Fenwick, Downie and Heino, respectively. "I didn't get the start I wanted," Higbee said. "My plan was to get out front. Scott (Zampach) was able to get away - I'm just happy to be up here. It's getting tougher every time I ride these things to get on the podium." With Blackmon being almost a local and all, his effort was somewhat inspired: "It was real important for me to do well here in North Carolina. I got a good start and just tried to hold on. I guess I slowed down too much on the waving yellow flag and he got away." (N Results H-D TWINSPORTS: 1. Scott Zampach; 2. Shawn Higbee; 3. Chuck Blackmon; 4. Andy Fenwick; 5. Chuck Downie; 6.
