Questionable behavior
Within the past year I read where Jeff
Matiasevich said he was his own personality and didn't want to be a Jeff
Stanton. Well, when he won the 250cc
Pro class at Perris Raceway on April 10,
I was in attendance (racing in the Vet
Junior class) and happened to pit close
to him. I was disappointed to see him
joking with his friends, putting his cap
on backwards, and being completely
oblivious to the fact that the national
anthem was being played.
Then, at the Indianapolis Supercross,
his behavior really got to me. In the second heat race, Larry Ward got completely out of shape in the last tum before the
finish line and looped his bike sideways,
taking out Matiasevich. Both riders
remounted with Matiasevich crossing
the line in front of Ward and taking the
final transfer spot to the main. What
happened next was completely unnecessary. As Ward rode by, Matiasevich hit
him, completely knocking him off his
bike. Ward ran after him, but
Matiasevich rode back to .the pits without stopping.
I hope the AMA fines Matiasevich
and I think Suzuki should also take
action against one of their "team" riders
who stooped low enough to hit another
one of their riders. The actions I have
described are a poor reflection on our
sport and are not consistent with the
image we want to portray to the general
public.
