MegaSeries: Round 4
Maximoff moves at
Muddy Creek
By Barbara and Loren Williams
BLOUNIVILLE,1N, APR 18
att Maximoff wrapped up the
125cc Modified and 250cc B Stock
and Modified overalls with
apparent ease at Muddy Creek Raceway,
where over 550 riders did battle.
Saturday's round of Stock-class qualifiers found Jake Morris battling with
Wesley Stiles for the lead in the 8xc (1415) division, until two laps from the end
of the moto, when Morris pulled his
Yamaha off the track on the far side.
Stiles inherited the point position and
cruised to the win, then came back to
check on Morris.
"All the spokes got ripped out of my
back wheel," explained Morris. "We
don't have a spare wheel along, so I
guess that's that."
Jon Boruff ~e to the rescue by supplying a wheel for Morris, who showed
his gratitude by taking command of the'
second moto from the start and sailing
to a convincing win. Stiles was second
for the overall victory.
Lending a hand to a fellow racer provided some consolation to Boruff, who
won the first moto of the 85cc (12-13)
class, only to have his clutch go south in
moto two. Boruff was still able to garner
second overall. The Jim's/Gear/Pro
Circuit/PJl/Hammerhead Graphicssponsored Scott had stayed close to
Boruff in moto one.
Putting a damper on an otherwise
positive day, Brad Clark broke both his
wrists and his collarbone when his bike
slipped out of gear and took a nosedive
over a jump. Clark had just recovered
from a fractured. femur sustained last
July, while racing in the A class. He had
dropped back to the B division this year
to get back up to speed. Fortunately, the
breaks were clean and should heal
quickly.
Paul Currie was first off the line in
theoopening moto of the 12Scc B class on
Sunday, while Maximoff stuck to him
like glue, pressuring all the way until
Currie made a mistake in the whoop
section. Currie remounted quickly, losing only one position, but by then
Maximoff was out of reach.
On the start of moto two, Maximoff
pulled away from the pack, leaving
Currie to duel with first Kris Swaney,
then Shawn Schultz, to get and keep the
second spot. Maximoff won the moto
and the overall.
The first round of 250cc B action
found Jamie Frazier out front, while
Maximoff pulled a truly awful start.
While Frazier advanced through the
back markers of the staggered-start
250cc A field, Maximoff put his head
down and doggedly worked the 250cc B
pack. By the end of the moto, Frazier had
come up to sixth in the combined field
for the B win, and Maximoff had gotten
as far as eighth for second in the B class.
Though Jeff Shields had claimed the
second-moto 250cc B class holeshot,
Frazier quickly displaced him and proceeded to stretch an advantage of eight
seconds on runner-up Maximoff. As
Frazier took the checkered flag well
ahead of the rest of the B division, several fathers and mechanics were already
on their way to protest the win.
"Even though 1 rode A two years
ago, I only raced two or three times last
year because of my finances," explained
Frazier. "Today I got disqualified
because 1 did too well, so Maximoff got
the win. But in a way, it's kind of good,
M
Alan Andreu (149) leads Mike Andrews
(601) and Earl May at Muddy Creek MX.
because it showed me that 1 can still ride
with the A guys."
