came in the Sportsman Open Twin
Intermediate class as he captured two
mota wins on a 1967 Triumph. Ripley
was out front of his nine competitors by
lap two and never looked back. Bill
Knight, on a beautiful 1974 Norton,
hung as close as he could ta Ripley. It
paid off for Knight as his third and second place finishes combined to give him
second overalL
The second trophy collected by
Ripley came in the Premier 500cc II
Intermediate class, where he and his
1968 Bultaco took two seconds behind
class winner John Lefevre on a lightning-fast 1967 Husqvama. Lefevre had
fair starts and then quickly out-dueled
his competition and was in total command very early.
Envision this: your moto is about· to
start and the man controlling the starting gate is a two-time Grand National
Champion, the first man ever to win one
of every type of race that made up the
Grand National Championship (short
track, TT, half mile, mile and road race).
During the race, you are passed and
maybe even repassed by former factory
riders stars like Murphy, Rapp, Grant,
Aldana and even two-time 500cc World
MX Champion Smith.
While dreaming of all this, you might
fail to realize that the man who just
handed you your seventh place trophy
and shook your hand was that World
Champion and now head of the
American Historic Racing Motorcycle
Association.
It was a day to remember.
