not," said Hoess. "A lot can happen in
that slippery first turn, but I got the start
I needed and just went as fast as I could.
I'm glad I came out here to do this race.
I didn't put in enough days last year to
make the team, even though I've gotten
top American before. I really want to go
to Holland."
Roeseler had a disappointing score
on the morning's grass track, allowing
Hrehor to sneak into second overall, and
Davis to close the gap considerably. In
the 250cc class' muddy final moto, Davis
put his motocross experience to good
use, snaring the holeshot and putting a
slight cushion on Smith. While Smith
rode conservatively, Roeseler quickly
moved into third and began to attack
the Suzuki rider's rear fender in an
attempt to retain second overall.
Roeseler actually snuck by Smith in a
muddy section of the course, but he
went wide in the following turn and
Smith moved back into second. Soon
after, Roeseler lost the front end in a
slippery turn and went down. Roeseler
remounted in time to retain third in the
moto, but Davis won by a big enough
margin to steal second overall from his
teammate. Smith was a close second in
the moto, easily good enough for the
overall win.
"I crashed in the grass track in the
morning," said Roeseler. "It was slippery, and I hit a stump in a turn and fell.
I landed on my left side, which was
already sore, and that knocked the wind
out of me. The final moto was a lot of
fun but after I fell, I just kind of settled
for third:'
Honda-mounted Silvestri won the
500cc class' final moto after a battle
with Paul Krause, but Dahners retained
the lead in the accumulative scores.
In the combined 350cc/Open FourStroke/Senior class, Rhodes fell twice in
the first 200 yards, and was in dead last
by a considerable margin. Neilson led the
way, but Rhodes immediately mounted
an incredible charge through the pack.
By the final lap, Rhodes had moved into
second place, and he slowly began to reel
iri the Husqvama pilot. It appeared that
Rhodes would run out of time, but he
closed the gap in the mudhole and made
the winning pass soon after.
"I couldn't believe it when I went
down the second time," said Rhodes. "I
hit the brakes, but nothing happened,
and I slid into the guy in front of me.
After that I just tried picking off one
rider after another. I knew I had a good
lead coming into the moto, but I was
still worried."

Rhodes won the 350cc Four-Stroke
class, and Neilson topped the Open
Four-Stroke division.
Burleson aced the Senior class, but
the die-hard award went to Tom
Ebersole, who finished the event
despite a scary incident on Day 3.
Ebersole had changed both his tires at
the end of the day, and he forgot to
pump his brakes back up before riding
his bike to the impound area. The
Husky rider crashed into a chainlink
fence and cut his forehead. After
impounding his bike, Ebersole headed
to the hospital for stitches, and completed the final day for second place in the
Senior class.
