~ DIRTTRACK Series: Round 2 Hart seemed to pull away with relative ease after that and held a 15 bike length at the finish. A zany last lap saw Eklund slide into the hay bales unhurt in turn three while Varnes dropped from second to fourth behind Freitas and McDowell. "The bike ran great all day," said Hart. "I tried to pace myself and break away near the end. No sense in pushing it too hard right from the start." (N e Results TIME TRIALS: 1. Mike Hale (37.645 seconds); 2. Ridcy Graham (37.698); 3. Scott Parker (37.805); 4. Kevin Ricky Graham won the $5000 first prize in the Camel Challenge dash race_ L Before the start of the heat races, Mike Hale ,!a5 presented a plaque for turning in the day's fastest qualifying lap. HalJ! also-umed a $100 bonus from the AMA. Dave Camlin ~7) won the fastest heat race and went on to finish ninth in the NationaL went," said Hale. "We're on a totally new motorcycle, new frame and all. I'm still getting used to it. Things will get better and better." Atherton nipped Jones by the slightest of margins at the line for seventh. "[ couldn't get the track figured out," said a disappointed Atherton. "It seemed like every time I got going good, I'd slip off the groove." Jones was happy with his performance, and quite excited about his Loral Lake Honda. "It feels great to be back on a Honda again," said Jones. "It felt like [ never got off. It is a whole different bike, but once I get used to it I'll be back up front." Fast heat winner Camlin finished ninth and equalled his best-ever National finish. Camlin ran near the front of the pack in the early stages before slowly slipping back. Veteran Poovey, the rider from Texas who is beginning his 17th Grand National Championship season, rounded out the top 10, but made it very clear that he "didn't get tired." The comment was made in reference to a mention in our series preview that conditioning would be a factor in his performance this year, following a season-ending accident that left him with a punctured lung and multiple broken ribs and other injuries. 600 Support drive into three that I wanted to - I went in too hot and had to go for the low line. " Parker capitalized on Graham's bobble and closed to his rear fender as they zipped through tum four and towards the finish. In textbook-fashion, Parker pulled out of the draft and denied Graham victory by no more than half a wheel. "Ricky started to bounce around in the last two corners," said Parker. "[ saw my chance and I made the best of it:' 8 . Carr crossed the finish line a distant third after battling early on with Springsteen and Morehead. Once free of the two veterans, though, Carr did indeed begin t.o close the gap on Graham and Parker, but a slip near the halfway point left him sliding back out of contention. "I started to push pretty hard and was actually catching up," said Carr. "But I slipped off the groove near the halfway point and lost aU I had made up. I felt like a duck out of water today, but it's still early in the season." After losing touch with Carr, Morehead and Springsteen battled tooth-and-nail over fourth. Longtime friends, the two veteran racers managed to entertain themselves throughout the race. "I looked back at Stevie a couple of times on the straights and slapped the back of my bike like a horse," said Springsteen, who celebrated his 36th birthday just 10 days prior to the race. "I was laughing so hard that my face shield started to fog up," said 37-yearold Morehead later. Morehead would have the last laugh, though, as he managed to squeak past Springsteen before the finish. Hale finished a lonely sixth behind Morehead and his Bartels' teammate Springsteen, but was quite pleased with his performance. "I'm happy with the way the day A field of 45 experts showed up to do battle in the 600cc Support class, many of them members of the newlyformed Standard Expert class. But for all practical purposes, the races looked like carbon copies of last year's Junior Nationals (with the exception that the riders all h,!d white number plates instead of yellow). The racing was fast and furious, though, and the support races provided some of the closest racing of the day. Last year's Junior National Champion, James Hart, trounced the field on a works Wood-Rotax, besting 1991 Junior National Champion Wink Freitas and Bobby McDowell. AIl was not easy for Hart, however, as he was joined in the lead pack by Freitas, McDowell, Jeff Eklund and Kevin Varnes and they ran no more than a few bike lengths apart for the majority of the race. Hart led the majority of the laps with Freitas stealing the point here and there, but when the five lap signal came out Hart dropped the hammer. Atherton (37.831); S. Jay Springs...., (38.858); 6.
