it A three or better would be needed to
clinch the win for Hamann.
Hamann had taken a pair of twos earlier, and the AXO Section had an obstacle that was very capable of extracting a
five.
Hamann easily cleaned the opening
four-foot step, turned right and dropped
off flawlessly. He turned around to confront a+ daunting four-foot undercut
before setting up and hitting the launching rock perfectly. Hamann landed at the
top of the shelf cleanly to the roar of the
crowd.
Only a relatively easy trip through
some jumbles and twin four-foot chasm
jumps, and Hamann's long-sought EI
Trial win was his.
He jumped the first gap and hopped
the rear wheel to set-up for the replay.
But when the rear wheel landed, the
bike died. A loud gasp erupted from the
gallery, followed by dead silence.
Eventually, cheers in appreciation of
Hamann's effort materialized as a five
was punched in his card.
Hamann was only 10 feet from the
exit.
"Painful," Hamann said later. "After I
stalled and fived it, I knew it was real
close. It turned out I won."
Scorekeepers Terri Boudreau and
Sharon V amelI pored over the two riders' loop cards before declaring Hamann
the winner by a clean. Ironically,
Hamann had lost second place to Head
on cleans at E1DE xxn.
"It feels great," Hamann said with a
huge smile. "I'm stoked. Just the whole
thing. The whole weekend being dedicated to me. It's pretty special"
Hamann was awarded a Beta Zero
provided to him by the American Trials
Association in recognition of his contribution to the sport and his outstanding
championship streak.
Head, although disappointed with
his runner-up spot, was generous with
his approval of the Exhibition Sections.
"You've got to hand it to (section
designer) Paul (Webster). He did a fine
job," said Head. "As long as he keeps
setting them up, I'll keep riding them."
The three-time National Champion
also gave Hamann his due.
"I felt pretty good," Head explained.
'1 just didn't ride as good as I needed to
beat Tom. Tom was riding really good
t:N
today."
