.-----------------------------------------------, .. special day. But in the next sections it "' started falling apart." Cunningham, starting on row 20, was bottlenecked in the next section by B riders trapped on a difficult hill. In the next section he suffered a back flat tire. Finally, after 115 miles, the four-time National Enduro Champion tore up part of his radiator, bringing his "special day" to an unfortunate finish. Ke~ Brandon, winner of the 200cc A class, was also having an exceptional day, but he burned his clutch up so bad in the last section that he had to disconnect his clutch cable to make it to the last check and scored a catastrophic 25 for a total of 48. After Cunningham's departure, Russell was thought to be leading the event on the heels of poor checks by Hatch, Hawkins and Hines. "I burned an early check while JR zeroed it," said Hawkins. "After three cheCKS I was four down, Steve was at four, and I think Kevin was in at five. I had to play catch-up for most of the day after that but I started making it up as soon as possible. It started to even out because I zeroed a check when Russell scored a two. I had to push really hard and I barely made it at :58." "I was too aggressive in the early stages and that caused me to bum a check, too," added Hatch. "I missed a mileage marker that was on the outside of a comer because I was kind of late. It was an emergency check and I burned it by a minute when I went through. I thought it was my minute and that I had zeroed it, but that missed marker made me a minute off." Hatch got back into lead contention with more aggressive riding; both he and Hawkins gambled on the last AA section - a 14-mile loop with three checks - by attacking early. The two teammates were fortunate that there was no control check in the section. "That last section was real1y the high point of my day," said Hawkins, who posted scores of three and two in the last section while Russell put up a pair of fours. "I gambled but it won the race for me. Everything was working perfect. I've got a new motor from Jimmy at ProCircuit and Mike at Factory Connection has my suspension working right. It all finally came together at the end." Unofficially, the 4/3 scores of Hines were second best to Hawkins in the last loop. "I had a decent lead on Randy going into the last part and I let it get away," said a disgruntled Russell. "They didn't have a control check in the first part and I dropped two minutes while Randy gambled and went in early for a zero check. The bad part about knowing that you have a lead in an enduro is that you tend to be too conservative. He beat me by three minutes in the last 14 miles. I didn't want to break my bike or body. I thought myself right out of the race." Russell's total score of 17 was still good enough for second overall ahead of the 18 posted by Hines. Hatch was fourth at 20; a mudhole slowed him in the last section. Still, Hatch was able to beat out Kelby Pepper (also in at 20) in a tie-breaker by five seconds. Alan Gravitt edged Joey Hopkins, the first round winner, for sixth in the final tally while Kelly Getz posted the eighth-best total score. m f ? MOTOCROSS :~ }:- HAPPENING :;' GRAND IIJlDONJl..
