On the second lap, Brooks got crossrutted over a set of triples and parted company with his bike. Stanton, just a few feet behind Brooks, collided with the errant YZ250 and went down in a heap, with his bike laying on top of him. Brooks was quick to pick the bike off of Stanton, who continued to lay unmoving in the center of the track. Medical personal carried him off of the track and through a tunnel to a waiting ambulance. Up front, McGrath continued to pull away, and Kiedrowski moved into a distant second on lap four. Lawrence fell in a turn and slipped back in the pack, while Emig snuck into third. The top three positions rema ined the same until lap 12, when Kiedrowski went down at the base of the uphill. "1 landed in those ruts and before 1 knew what happened, 1 was on the ground," said Kiedrowski, who was slow to remount. Emig inherited second, and after riding most of the early part of the race in 'fifth and sixth, Swink motored into a distant third. The top three remained the same until the finish, with McGrath winning by a huge margin. "Last night 1 didn't ride the way 1 like to," said McGrath. "This helps make up for it. I'm really excited to go back to the California tracks." Emig, . who finished 15th on Saturday, was pleased with his second runner-up finish of the series. "Last night was embarrassing for me. 1 wasn't trying to make up for it - I'm just trying to get up there where 1 know 1 should be." "This has really been a confusing year," said thiro-place finisher Swink. "It just goes up and down. 1 wish the whole season could start all over tomorrow." Craig and Lamson rounded out the top five. e (Left to right) Jeff Curry, Doug Henry and Tim Ferry celebrate on Saturday. Henry won both 125cc mains and clinche~ the title.. in the head and 1 was seeing stars. On top of that, 1 got hit in the nuts and 1 felt like 1 was going to throw up." With Craig and Bradshaw out of contention, Kiedrowski found himself ahead by nearly a third of a lap. McGrath, despite having been overtaken by Kiedrowski, Cooper, Craig, Bradshaw and Stanton at various points in the race, was second. Stanton had gone on a late-race rampage, and actually stuffed his teammate in a tum, but McGrath got back around quickly, and Stanton was third. Kiedrowski collected his second-eareer win. "A lot of things have to come into play, and everything just went right," said Kiedrowski. "This one was probably a little easier (than the first win), because 1 had been there before." . "1 figure 1 got kind of lucky," McGrath said. "1 should've gotten about fourth." Cooper held on to notch fourth, and Team Honda's Steve Lamson rode strong in the latter stages of the race to round out the top five. 14 125cc Main Henry shot to the front early in the first lap of the IS-lap main in the eighth round of the 125cc Eastern Regional Series, and he immediately began to pull away. By the second circuit, Henry had already established a seven-second advantage on Suzuki's Ezra Lusk, the only rider with a real hope at catching Henry in the points. Those hopes were soon dashed when Lusk went over the bars over a double, and remounted back in the pack. Team DGY rider Chad Pederson took over second place, but was a good 15 seconds behind the blazingHenry. Jeff Curry, who hails from nearby Saginaw, Michigan, moved up to pressure Pederson, nearly getting by on the final lap, but Pederson held on to clalm the runner-up spot. "I'm sorry 1 had to miss the race, but 1 was having fun," said Henry, who was approximately half a lap ahead of Pederson at the finish. "I'm not sure, but 1 think 1 wrapped it all up." Henry had, indeed clinched the series crown with two rounds remaining. Sunday 250cc After Saturday night's bam-burner, Sunday's racing was bound to be a bit of a let-down, and that proved to be the case. Still sore from his get-off the night before, Craig nonetheless led start to finish in the fir~t heat, posting the win ahead of Kiedrowski and Stanton. Despite the win, Craig was still disappointed from the night before, stating simply, "A heat win doesn't pay no money." Lamson, looking more comfortable on a supercross track than he has most of the season, passed Suzuki's Phil Lawrence to win the second heat. McGrath ran second early on, but suffered a scary-looking fall at the base of the uphill, ramming his helmet straight into a hay bale. McGrath remounted dead last and cruised a couple of laps before pulling off the track. "1 landed in some ruts with the tire turned, and the bars got yanked out of my hands," explained McGrath. "At least 1 didn't get tired out; 1 only rode a couple laps." Swink moved by Lawrence to finish second, and Lawrence was third. Bradshaw put an aggressive pass on Cooper to snatch the final transfer spot in the heat. Matiasevich and McGrath won the two semis, and Export, Pennsylvania's Mike Jones topped the last chance qualifier. McGrath again holeshot the main event, and this time appeared to have no intentions of relinquishing the lead. Kiedrowski was fourth off the start, while Stanton and Bradshaw both gated U5cc Main Henry again grabbed the point position in the main and left the rest of the pack to argue over second. Team DGY's Jeff Dement started strong and ran in second place for most of the race, though Curry, after a mediocre start, sliced through the pack to challenge the Yamaha pilot in the last few laps. The 17-year-old Dement was able to hold off Curry for the runner-up spot, however, well behind the flawless Henry. "1 could go a little harder out there today, because 1 didn't have to worry about crashing and losing the championship:' said Henry. "1 was getting a little tired at the end:' said Dement, who missed much of the season with an injured knee. "Jeff was getting pumped from the fans, but 1 got lucky. 1 knew Doug was gonna win; He deserves it. 1 just wanted to get second." (;N' Results SATURDAY 250 HEAT 1, 1. Guy Cooper (5u%); 2.
