Meet Champion Motorcycling Stars on aFabulous ; Norwegian Cruise Line, 7-day Mexican Riviera Cruise! e Join Us On The First Annual Runner-up Scott Summers was hampered by a loose hand guard on the last lap. Smith. "Thanks to Dave Bertram, who was helping me out today. He thought it would be best for me to pit after the third lap, not the second. As it turned out, it was the right decision. 1 had just enough of a lead on Summers, that when 1 re-entered the race after 1 had pitted, 1came out just ahead of him." "Rodney was about 12 seconds ahead of Summers going into the pit," said Bertram. "We got him fueled up in about seven seconds and he (Smith) pulled out right in front of Scott. Scott might've gotten away from Rodney, and it's so hard to catch up to someone on the trail if you can't see them. 1made the call to pit on the third lap after 1 saw how close they (Smith and Summers) were to each other after the second lap." "Not having to stop and refuel was real helpful," said Summers. "In California you have to stop and kill the engine, so refueling here takes time." Smith headed out on the last lap just ahead of Summers and would actually pull away from the Honda rider and take the checkered flag with approximately one minute and 15 seconds to spare over Summers. "My hand guard came loose when 1 feel over earlier in the race," said Summers. "Whenever I used my front brake, the guard would keep the lever from releasing. It was really frustrating." Plessinger was not a factor among the leaders after discovering that his bike needed to be refueled after every lap. "My bike just didn't get the gas mileage," said Plessinger. "1 had hoped I could get two laps a tank out of it, but as it turned out, it didn't come close. Having to pit every lap did me in." Like Plessinger, Hrehor, using an MX tank, also had to pit for gas every lap and eventually finished fourth, approximately a minute behind the defending champ. The Czechoslovakian said it was the easiest race he'd ever ridden in the U.s.. "It was fast, too crazy for me," said Hrehor. Rhodes, riding a Suzuki RMX250, was one of the fastest riders on the track. He started the race on the fifth row and finished a very respectable fifth overall. Husqvarna-mounted Eric Mashbir finished sixth, while Honda CR250 pilot Scott McLaughlin finished seventh after passing King on the la~t lap. Rounding out the top 10 were King, Honl,ia-mounted Curt Wilcox and . Kawasaki Team Green's Duane Conner. l:N DOUG POLEN 2Time World SuperBike Champion CRUISE November 7-14, 1993 You've read about ~em ... You've seen ~em on television...
