Lyons stayed right on the rear wheel of Hutchinson until lap.five when she missed a shift and lost ground. With Lyons unable to rake up the needed distance it was Hutchinson taking the checkered flag first. In the second heat it was Hutchinson and Lyons off again. The battle continued again until lap five when Lyons made her move, taking over the first place position and easily going on for the win. Results BEG STK.: 1. Erick Aquilar (yam); 2. Gordon Forbe! Vohland scores Riverfront Motocross win By John Silva MARYSVILLE, CA, MAR. 21 Winning at Marysville has become a family tradition for the racing Vohland brothers, and Tyson Vohland kept that tradition alive by finishing fIrst in the Pro class. The North Country Yamaha/Yoko/Smith-backed Vohland earned the win after returning to competition follqwing a fIve-month layoff. Moto one saw rookie pro Derek Watkins take the holeshot with Vohland second. Watkins looked g60d in his first race as a professional, and he held firm despite pressure from the more-experienced Vohland. Watkins hit the , rockers aggressively, and aimed for the high point on many of the jumps, thus dearing obstacles with high-flying antics. Vohland stayed right on Watkins rear fender, although he £lew low and was dearly seeking the smoothest line. . "[ was having some trouble with my arms pumping up:' Vohiand explained later. "[ could stay right on him (Watkins) without pushing it, but I couldn't get by." By mid-race, Watkins and Vohland began to . encounter backmarkers. Both made it around the slower riders without incident, and eventually lapped more than half the field. Vohland charged on the final straight, but a lapper was on his line in the last comer, preventing any chance for a last-second pass. At the finish, Watkins prevailed with Vohland second and Tyce Jackson a distant third. . Watkins smoked 'em again at the start of moto two, and entered the back-section with five bike lengths over Vohland. Again, the top two used radically different techniques to neg<>tiate the course. Watkins flew hIgh, and held tight to the inside in the comers, while Vohland railed around the outside, using every inch of the berms. Different as they were, the race was very dose. This time, Vohland appeared to have the drive he lacked in the first moto, and quickly dosed on Watkins. Handlebar-t<>-handlebar, the pressure was fierce, but Watkins looked determined to keep the lead. In a sweeping'tum at the north corner of the track, Wa tkins' lead was cut short. While protecting the inside'line, a pothole caught his front wheel and Watkins went down. Unhurt, he was able to re-start quickly, but Vohland had moved pastas well as several others. With a clear track ahead, Vohland clicked it up a notch. Blazing around the track unrestrained, he turned his best lap times of the day. Though things looked good for Vohland, the race was far from over. Watkins straightened his goggles and took off after the leaders. Riding fike a man possessed, Watkins had a few dose calls as he charged after Vohland. , This wild ride moved Watkins past everyone except Vohland. Watkins chipped away at Vohland's lea,d by a few seconds every lap, but it wasn't enough. Although Watkins dosed to within one straightaway of the leader, he ran out of time before he. could challenge. At the finish, it was Vohland with a good lead over Watkins with third place going to the amazingly fast Intermediate Tyce Jackson. In the Old Timer Master class, Larry Hartnett was the man to beat after his first-moto win. Hartnett holeshot moto two, and it looked to be a clean sweep for the Suzuki rider until a crash dropped him to the back of the pack. Pat Smith inherited the top spot, and fought a tough battle with Tim Colvert for several laps. The race went right to the wire, but Smith won by a wheel. Consistant 3-2 finishes gave Colvert second in the final tally, with Richard Shilling earn7 ing third. Includel Ihlpplng. (#780) Three's a charm, and who knows that better than 3-time World Grand Prix Road Racing Champion Wayne Rainey. This "King Wayne" video highlights the spectacular come-from-behind racing season of Team Marlboro 80berts Yamaha road race warrior Wayne Rainey. The last man to win three consecutive 500cc titles was Rainey's Marlboro team owner "King "Kenny Roberts in 1978, '(9 and '80. Now the title of "King" can be transferred to Wayne Rainey as he matches a racing feat only he and Kenny Roberts share. In the course of an extraordinary season, Ooohan had romped away in the lead as an injured Rainey struggled and fell again and again at the beginning of the season. By the mid-point, trailing by 65 points and carrying fresh injuries, his title defense seemed hopeless. Then Michael Ooohan crashed in Assen, breaking his leg and complications to the injury had kept him out for eight weeks, as the determined Rainey's challenge gathered strength. By the time the riders reached South Africa, Ooohan's lead of 65 points at Assen had dwindled to just two. The World Champion was determined to prove to the world that his style and skill would bring him out on the top...and indeed it did! 60 minutes from GP Video.
