Tracy Anders styled to his first ovetall Expertclass win in three years at the second round of
the 15-stop Texas Cross Country Series:
The top riders from three different classes
were unknowingly only seconds apart on
adjusted time in competition for the Expert
Overall award. The track was comprised of a
10.5-mile loop, and while it included every soil
type from sand to hardpack and rock, it was
made up primarily of hardpack clay, which
developed more ilian its fair share of squareedged chop. A fast track by most standards, the
course incorporated three MX tracks, plenty of
fast woods and a few high-speed field runs.
Rain the previous week left the track rather sloppy for prerace practice, but only a few mud
holes remained for the 392 competitors by face
time Sunday morning.
With perfect weather and temperatures in
the 70s, the Pro closs started off the afternoon
event. Fort Worth Honda Mart-sponsored
jeremy Fipps hasn't been able to buy a holeshot
in his two years of racing the Pro class, but he
""me through the first tum in the lead, with his
nine competitors behind him. One of the nine
was MSR/Scott/ Arlington Suzuki-backed Cloy
Hoenshell, who quickly secured the second spot.
ScverCll miles into the rClce, Fipps fumbled Clnd
hit the dirt, .. lIowing Hoenshellto take the lead.
Although Fipps was near last after restarting, he
came through scoring at the end of the first lap
bClck in second place, and right on Hoe-nshell.
Hoenshell pushed hard enough to keep Fipps
behind him.
"He (Hoenshell) was just giving me riding
lessons," confessed a frustrated Fipps.
The two completed the 42-mile race in a little
over 92 minutes, with over a two-minute advantage on third-place jeff Pearson.
Brent Shaw snagged the holeshot in the
2S0cc Expert Class, leading Eric Hess, Gary
Benton, and Anders. Anders left Brent Shaw to
battle with Adrian jacobs for second, and
walked away from the class. Anders pulled out
of the pits with a 30'second advantage after

refueling before the final lap, while jacobs
fought tooth and nail to recover from a poor
start. By the final lap, Jacobs had caught Shaw,
who was running second. Between the midcourse check point and the finish, the two
swapped positions no less than three times.
"I just didn't have my head straight," said
jacobs. "Every time I'd get by Brent, I'd overrun
a tum or something."
While Shaw and jacobs logged finish times
sufficient for fourth and fifth overall, it was
Open Expert Mike Abbott and Over-3O Expert
Adam Cox who unknowingly threatened
Anders for the overall. Abbott had his hands full
trying to adapt to a new WR500 and to get
around ·Bert Reynolds, who had pulled the
holeshot. Reynolds was keeping a fast pace until
he lost control while landing off one of the MXsection jumps. Abbott was right behind him and
careened off the downed riders' bike, tearing off
Reynolds' throttle cable and brake hose.
Abbott's finish time placed him only seconds
behind Anders.
Back in the Over-3O Expert class, Adam Cox
and David Culpepper were raging. Cox had gotten a poor start, while Culpepper shot to the
front within a mile of the start. Cox worked up
through traHic in hopes of reeling in the fourstroke. Culpepper's pace was slowed by a nat
tire, and Cox crossed the finish line with a class
win and third overall.

Brothers joe and Tim Savatgy both had the pleasure of going to the winners' circle at the
National Motorcycle Racing Association's
Coors/Vance &: Hines/Strickly Performance/
Sport Bikes/Ramada Inn-sponsored Winter
Challenge at Los Angeles County Raceway, as
joe won the Super Comp class, and Tim took top
honors in the Pro Gas division.
The Savatgy family was well represented in
the season opening event, as the independent
Suzuki racers were also joined by brother Jim
Savatgy, who lost in the first round 01 Pro Gas
competition.
Super Comp qualifying was led by joe
Savatgy, as he ran an 8.82 on the 8.81 index,
defeating Hank Peters' Kawasaki in the first
round, and then stopped Tom Sneddon's
Kawasaki in the semifinal. Savatgy then defeated 1992 Super Comp champion Karen Staffer
in the final round, with his 8.77/133.33 defeating
her 8.70/138.59 on the double break-
