The start area and pits were located in the small Mexican village of El Testerazo. Crashes held Jimmy Lewis, last year's third-place finisher, to seventh overall/first 125. Danny Hamel rode on the same minute as Roeseler, and finished second overalL Harden. "That messed up my whole ride." After a short IS-minute break (which many riders had to skip entirely), riders headed back out for the second of three 50-mile loops, and the schedule remained tight. Roeseler again completed the circuit with the best score, dropping 12 points, and Hamel and Davis again followed with 13 and 14 points, respectively. Rocks continued to be a' major factor, as discovered by Dirt Bike magazine editor Ron Lawson, who smashed his foot on a boulder and tore off a toe nail. "The pain was so bad 1 couldn't believe it," said Lawson, who was riding on the same minute with father/son duo Malcolm and Joel Smith. "After that I decided to try to keep up with Malcolm and just make as many checks as 1 could, and it started not to hurt as much. I don't think the nerve endings could stand that much pain, so they just started to die!" Lawson continued on for the third loop after the lunch stop, and finished the event with a respectable 167-point score for 23rd overall. Malcolm Smith also completed three loops, finishing 31st, while son Joel had an impressive 13S-point ride for 14th overall, just edging out Tom Webb, his boss at Dirt Rider magazine. Dropping only 14 points for the best score of the lpop, however, was Davis, who was doing his own navigating back on minute 38. "I needed the (timekeeping) practice, and it would have been a little crowded if Larry and Danny and I all rode on the same minute," said Davis. "They used some of the same trails that were on the first loop, and there were some pretty good berms built up by the time I came through. Most people moved out of the way pretty good, and I didn't have much of a problem with bottlenecks or anything." Davis' final-loop surge wasn't quite enough, however, as Roeseler and Hamel each posted 17-point scores for first and second overall, with totals of 46 and 48 points, respectively. Davis' final tally was 49, good enough for a close third overall ahead of fourth-place Russell. Southern California off-road ace Josh Chandler posted an impressive 67point total for fifth overall, and KTM desert specialist Greg Zitterkopf followed in sixth. "I was riding with Jeff (Russell), so he was doing all my timekeeping," said Zitterkopf. "It was a tough event; I was glad to finish." Rounding out the top 10 were Cycle World magazine's Jimmy Lewis, Suzuki rider David Rhodes, and Team Green teammates Garth Sweetland and Fri~z Kadlec.
