Shields scores at
Christiana Motocross
By Bart Wilber
OOOSTIANA, TN, FEB. 14
On a cold Valentines Day, Johnny Shields puUed
out a win in the 250cc A c1ass at Christiana
Raceway.
On the staggered start, David Irwin got the
holeshot and held the lead until Shields passed
him in a set of small stuller bumps. Barry Tapp
followed Shields by Irwin for second.
Bryan Gilliam passed Tapp for a short time,
but had trouble over a tabletop jump and Tapp
reclaimed second place. On the last lap in the
last tum, it was Tapp's tum to have some trouble, and he let Gilliam claim the second-place
fmish. Shields scored the easy win.
The second moto was much the same, with
Shields taking the lead at the start, foUowed by
Gilliam and then Tapp. The trio were in the
same positions at the fmish, with only three seconds between them.
In the first moto of the 250cc B class, Stacy
Hodges and Mike Duncan followed Shane
Berryhill to a close finish with the A rider.
In the second moto, Berryhill led to a convincing win, foUowed by Duncan and Shannon
Lynes. Ransom Jones and Hodges rounded out
the top five.
Berryhill was the only rider to win two classes
for the day as he cruised to an easy win in the
l25cc B division foUowed by Brandon Powers and
Clark Stiles. Stiles was the only rider to put any
pressure on Berryhill, as he was closing the gap
after a poor start. Stiles handed second place over
to Powers in the last lap when he lost his momentum after landing badly over a triple jump.

Enduro win falls to Ferro
By Ken Harvey Jr.
LUCERNE, CA, FEB. 21
Ventura County M.C:s John Ferro used his superior timekeeping tactics to score the overall honors at the UEA Tuff E' Nuff Enduro, narrowly
edging out fellow VCMC member and ISDE gold
medalist Jimmy Lewis by a mere two seconds.
The top six overall finishers managed to zero
the SO-mile race, and nearly 350 riders turned
out for the event.
The week of rain preceding the event left the
desert in perfect., dustless condition, and the
club was able to find several virgin trails on the
outskirts of the open area. The course was set up
as one big loop with a gas stop in the middle.
Careful timekeeping was in order for the entire
day, as the wet ground had mileage playing
games with most of the riders. The only real special test that had riders behind was thrown out
due to a mileage problem.
Bert Drovin (89) won the second heat ahead of Brian Supry (61) at the Berlin Ice Race.
"Farm Boy" Ferro, riding with Willie
Kennedy, Nathan Davis and Frank Underlin was
sharing timekeeping chores with Kennedy on
minute 63. '1 was letting Willie ride in front, and
I could tell when he would hit a check, so it was
easier to get through on :30," said Ferro. "I was
actually lucky in the sense that Willie held me up
in some of the fasler sections, 'cause 1 ended up
right in the middle of my minute. All the hot dog
guys were coming in hot." All four riders on
Ferro's minute finished in the lop 100veral1
Riding his first enduro in the 250cc class,
Dana Van Stee was also running in contention
for the overalL but hilling the lie-breakers a little
earlier cost him some valuable seconds.
Lewis carded a nearly perfect score, with the
exception of one check that he nearly burned.
Lewis was nm inlo while entering the check, but
through a protest was granted a sa>re of zero minutes and 30 seconds, and the tie-breaker seconds
proved fatal to his chances at the overall win.
"f was marked 'cause I dabbed, but I kept
forward motion," said Lewis. "After the checkers discussed what had happened and we
looked at the rule, I was given a zero."
Back at the top of the Senior class results was
Jack Labrum, who beat out rival Mike Keen.
A little farther back than usual was Team
Green hero Larry Roeseler, who finished 11th
overall one week after winning the opening
round of the National enduro series. Roeseler
still managed to steal a class win on his big
Kawasaki four...troke.
Another rider on a new Kawasaki thumper
was Team Green technician Dave Chase.
Attempting to follow in the Iradition of numberone plates, Chase got the year off to a good start
with a class win in the Vet Open division.
Super Senior class rider Dave Hutchings
took the one-loop oyerall win with a score of
one minute and four seconds. Brian Reese, a Dclass rider, was second overall o'n his open
Kawasaki, with a two-minute score.
Dual-sporters were out in force, with 14
entries in their class. Fred Tessaro of Team Dual
Dogs took the class win and an Impressive third
overall among the one-loop riden, with a twominute, 18-second tally, the result of a burned
check. Second place went to Monte Anderson,
who was followed by Mark Emery.
