Michael Myers scored the 250cc A class
win by finishing third overall.
14 points to Hawkins' 19 by the gas
stop.
'Tm just trying to keep my eyes
focued on the trail but you really can't
see anything under the water," said
Hatch. "I think that it's better to take
five seconds to make the right decision
than it is to just blast through everywhere. The water and sand here can
cause some real problems to a motorcy-

Hawkins proved Hatch's point.
When Hawkins' Suzuki sucked in too
much water, it appeared he was on his
way to registering a DNF for the day,
but he was fortunate enough to make it
past the seventh check before drowning
out. At that point he had a score of 47
and was tied with Hines for fourth overall. However, Hines won a tie-breaker
by a reported three seconds.
"The trail is really, really tough," said
Hopkins., "The water makes it pretty difficult to see where you're going, and the
trail is getting really wide from people
trying to go somewhere new every time.
I don't think that it's going to get any
better."
Hopkins' primary problem throughout the enduro was with the aforementioned brakes.
Jeff Russell, the 1991 National
Enduro Champion, also struggled with
bike problems all day long. '1'm riding a
new KTM 400 four-stroker with about
50 miles on it," said Russell. "I don't
think that this was the best event to do a
little R&D (research and development).
The bike feels all right but it's hard to
tell what it's doing with all the water
"and mud out there."
Russell was never in contention on
the new four-banger and had the misfortune of running out of gas in the late
stages.
Enduro fans were treated to an
appearance by 1990 National 12Sec MX
Champion Guy Cooper. Cooper rode a
Suzuki DR250S to a an impressive seventh o~erall, finishing just three points
behind Canadian Blair Sharpless.
"The electric starter was great but I
couldn't figure out how to use the thing
at first," said Cooper. "I didn't know
about having to have the kick-stand up
and all that. Every time I stalled it, I just
hit the little button and away I went." CN
