-- . . , . \ The track is laid out in the tri-oval area of Daytona Intemational Speedway. The demanding course is longer than other supercross tracks, so conditioning plays a role. side-by-side briefly, Kehoe getting sideways over the ruts and allowing Buehl to make a break. After gathering himself up, Kehoe made a charge that came up about two seconds short at the end. Ohkawara was alone in third with Suzuki Canada's Carl Vaillancourt fourth, Ross Pederson fifth, and Kawasaki-Yamaha of Shelby's Brian McElroy getting the last direct transfer. "The track's really rough out there," Buehl said. "On the outside line it's a little smoother and I was able to pull away. This is my first win in the 250s, qualifier or main event and it's a great one." Kurt McMillen quickly moved to the front of the second semi, taking over on the second lap and holding on until KTM's Cliff Palmer went by at the east end of the Gary Bailey-designed course which was laid out on the grassy area in front of the main grandstands and between the start/finish line area of the famous speedway's paved oval and pit lane. McMillen would lose one more spot, Andrews Cycles' Fred Andrews dropping him back to third on the fifth lap as Palmer sped into the distance. The excitement was farther back in the pack, Suzuki's Guy Cooper getting stuck in a rut, then doing an endo before rallying to finish 18th for the final transfer to the last chance qualifier. 250cc LCQ Cooper hesitated slightly at the start of the six-lap last chance qualifier, giv. ing Ty Davis and Kawasaki Team Green's Ray Crumb the chance to get away. On the third lap Davis was out of the race with an east end crash, the mishap occurring right after Cooper had moved past Crumb for second and set his sights on race-leader Mike Healey who took' over the lead with the Davis spill. Cooper gave chase to the flag, but came up less than two seconds short. Still, he was in the main. 250cc Main McGrath timed the gate perfectly and led the 3D-rider field as they funneled into the left-hand first tum. Stanton was second in front of Kiedrowski, Honda's Steve Lamson, Suzuki's Brian Swink, and an aggressive Bradshaw. By the end of the first lap Bradshaw was into fifth and up to second a lap later, though Kiedrowski would pass him right back and the pair would prepare to scrap for a number of laps as they closed on ra.ce-leader McGrath. The pass for the lead came on the eighth lap, Kiedrowski finding a better line through the ruts to move out front. "It was rough out there. J just had to switch lines and pkk better ones and once I smoothed out it helped me," Kiedrowski said. From there, it was smooth sailing for Kiedrowski. "We wanted to win this one so bad: This is the best one to win," Jeremy McGrath (15) holeshot the main event and finished second overall. 13
