Belgian Jacky Martens will again be campaigning a Husqvarna four-stroke in, the 1993 World Champ-ionship 500cc MX Series, but Cagiva recently dispelled rumors that Martens' countryman, World Champion Georges Jobe, would also ride a Husky thumper this season. Jobe wanted to contest just select rounds, and Cagiva officials say they would hire him only if he was committed to a full season of Grand Prix racing. The bike that Martens will ride reportedly features a special lightweight chassis, magnesium crankcases and a top-secret trick ignition system. Speaking of Husqvarna thumpers, Cagiva is said to be planning to release brand-new 350 and 610cc fourstrokes for 1994. The engines will feature a right-side kicks tarter and clutch, with the top ends being nearly identical to those on the current models. The frame on both bi kes is based on the current two-stroke chassis, doing away with the air box that currently forms the side of the motorcycle, and placing it in the conventional location. Dr. Bob Meister will be out of action for eight weeks after snapping his left clavicle on the third lap of the Expert Middleweight Superb ike race at Daytona International Speedway on February 28. Meister lost the front end going into turn one at, he estimates, about 160 mph. "I leaned over, just got off the gas and on the brakes, and it bottomed out. It just blew out from under me," Meister said. Four-time World Champion Eddie Lawson used the 3-Hour EBC Brakes Endurance Challenge at Daytona on Sunday, February 28, to test theVance & Hines Superbike he'll race in the Daytona 200. Along with teammate Colin Edwards II, Lawson took the track well after the s'tart of the race and was in and out of the pits. Unofficially, Lawson, who wore the same leathers he wore to victory here in 1986, clocked laps in the 1 minute, 51.5 second range, a little more than a second off Fast by Ferracci Doug Polen's qualifying record of 1:50.3SS set last year. With some GTU endurance bikes turning lap times 25 seconds slower than he was, it was likely among the scariest rides of his life. John DiSimone uffered a fatal brain aneurysm on February 5. DiSimone, who had made his home in the Daytona Beach area for the past decade or so, was a second generation motorcycle dealer in the '50s and '60s. He was the East Coast regional parts manager for Yamaha in '62 and '63; Ea t Coast representative for the Bultaco importer, Cemoto East, in '64 and '65; sales rep for southern California's Culver Oty Honda from '66 through '6S, and sales prep for Kawasaki from '69 to '73. He then went on to work in the Daytona area as an automobile salesman, most recently for Irv MacDougall Motors. He's survived by his brother, Joe DiSimone of Ormond Beach, Florida. Charles G. Barnett, 73, passed away on February 27 at his home in Downey, California. Barnett, the founder of Barnett Tool & Engineering, suffered congestive heart and kidney failure. He and his wife of 52 years, Afton, founded Barnett in 1948. He originally started the business to make control cable assemblies for British motorcycles. A self-taught tool and die maker, he did not start making clutch plates until the '60s. He is survived by his wife Afton, daughter and son-in-law Colleen and Mike Taylor, daughter and son-in-law Doralee and Bill Murray, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services will be held March 3 at Memorial Chapel, Rose Hills Memorial Park, 3900 S. Workman Mill Road in Whittier, California, at 11:30 a.m. Cards and letters may be sent to the family at 9920 Freeman Ave., Santa Fe Springs, CA 90670. Barnett Tool & Engineering will continue to be oper- . ated by CEO Afton Barnett, vice-president Mike Taylor and CFO Colleen Taylor.
