Photo by Henny Ray Abrams. ~ We're told that the folks who produced tapes of Camel Supercross events from 1988 through 1990 feel that with the events being telecast (on a tape-delay basis) there's no longer a market for such tapes. We suggest you program your VCR to tape the series telecasts this summer . .. Editor. This is in response to James zach's letter in the February 2 issue: When I heard that there would be a Grand Prix road race in the U.S. back in 1988, I knew I had to be there, so a friend and I flew from Philadelphia to see the race. It was great. I coughed up big bucks to fly out and see the race at Laguna 5eca but it was worth it. If $55 to see a World Championship GP is too much for people on the West Coast to pay, we have some very nice race tracks in the East and some very loyal fans. In your letters to the senators, be sure to mention the economic impact of the desert bill, the unanimous opposition to the bill in the effected desert communities, and an specific areas you are concerned about should we be stuck with a compromise. Why no points? When I have a question on motorcycle racing that I can't figure out or my friends can't answer, 1 ask the gurus at Cycle News. At the Seattle Supercross, I watched the other Frenchman - the one with the good attitude, Mickael Pinchon - place second in the 12Sec main event. And then I read in Cycle News that he won round five in San Diego. Well, blow this couch potato right off my seat, he isn't listed in the point standings. What happened? Did Jean-Michel Bayle's dominance and peanut head attitude make us discriminate against Frenchmen? Bart Widman Pt. Angeles, WA The Seattle, San Diego and Anaheim rounds of the Camel Supercross Series were sanctioned as Extra Nationals, a type of international event. Foreign riders were eligible to compete but were not eligible for points . .. Edilor. Team Smitty sighting I saw Smitty selling bean bag chairs and The other side of the story The letter describing the disqualification of Greg Zitterkopf from the Desert Viper Adelanto Grand Prix that appeared in the February 24 issue was apparently written by someone who did not see the incident. When two riders and their bikes went down in the water hole during the 250cc race, three flagmen took irnmed.ia te action to protect those riders, the approaching racers and two track workers trying to clear the course. They yellow-flagged the section and directed racers to the bypass around the water hole jump, avoiding a potentially catastrophic situation. However, one rider who encountered the experienced flagman's clear directions to take the bypass took evasive action around the flagman, ignored the bypass and accelerated over the water hole jump 160 feet away. This flagrant violation of track officials' directions put four individuals in immediate and direct peril. This total disregard for the safety of fellow participants and track workers left no choice but to remove the rider from the course at once. This rider turned out to be Mr. Zitterkopf. The final decision on this matter lies with the District 37 Sports Committee. Meanwhile, inflamatory letters of the style that appeared last week, full of falsehoods, distortions and total fabrications, serve no wothwhile purpose. The Desert Vipers M.e. wishes to acknowledge the other 1749 racers who participated and followed track officials' directions. We thank them for making the Adelanto Grand Prix one of the premier off-road events in the country and invite them to return to Adelanto the first weekend of February 1994.
