The entire front end of the frame is made of chill-east aluminum. Securely fastened to the engine housing, the front sub-frame holds the central spring strut of the Telelever in position. Like the K model BMWs, the new RllOORS can be purchased with the optional Anti-Lock Braking System. However, the ABS design is slightly different than before and is now called ABS II. The ABS components have been redesigned to be made more compact and lighter, as well as to improve performance. BMW claims the new ABS weighs 9.3 pounds less than its previous system. The pressure modulator and control unit is now fitted in a central position beneath the fuel tank. The brakes consist of two dual-piston 305mm discs up front and one single-piston 285mm disc in the rear. The new three-spoke cast aluminum wheels are derived from the K bikes. Obviously, the entire bodywork is allnew and fabricated of high-quality thermoplastics. The 5.1-gallon gas tank is constructed of polyamide plastic. The full all-round fairing that extends down beneath the cylinders and largely encompasses the engine housing and front wheel mudguards are together available as an option. Both fairings, full The RliOORS will be available in three different colors: bright red, blueish green, and silver. design does not incorporate a traditional overhead cam setup; instead, the system uses one auxiliary shaft in the center of the motor to operate camshafts that are now located in the middle of each cylinder. Via a chain, the auxiliary shaft with a reduced ratio of 2:1 is driven directly from the crankshaft. Located deep within the engine benea th the crankshaft, this auxiliary shaft - running at half the crankshaft speed - incorporates two chains that drive their respective camshafts. These camshafts operate within the back side of the cylinder next to the inlet valves (see diagram). Another big change is the switch to an electronic fuel injection system. BMW engineers tossed out the old twin Bing carburetor design for a· Digital Motor Electronics system which is already featured on the K series BMW motorcycles. The three main reasons for fuel injection are improved engine output and torque, reduced fuel consumption, and reduced exhaust emissions, which brings us to the exhaust system. The new Boxer engine now incorporates a three-way catalytic converter as an option. BMW has been offering catalytic converters on its K models since 1991 but, until now, not on the twins. The converter is located near the middle/back portion of the two stainless steel and chrome-plated constructed exhaust pipes. BMW claims that the RllOORS develops a noise level of 79 dB, the current EPA limit being 82 dB. BMW also c1aims that the new Boxer motor develops 90 bhp at 7250 rpm, and maximum torque at 70 ft/lb at 5500 rpm. Transmission-wise, the new Beemer uses a dog-shift five-speed gearbox derived from the K models. A singleplate dry clutch is used. The RllOORS really doesn't have much of a "frame" to speak of. For the most part, the chassis is made up of two sections - separate rear and front subframe sections. The rear sub-frame is a steel-tube structure connected both to the transmission and engine housing. A transverse bridge between the upper tubes of the frame supports the top of the rear shock, while the bottom of the shock is connected directly to the monolever swinging arm. The chassis is basically made up of two - front and rear - sub-frame sections attached to the transmission and engine housing. To easily distinguish the new Boxer engine from the old, the cylinder jugs are angled downward. BMW claims the new angle provides slightly better cooling. and short, feature a manually adjustable windshield. It adjusts throughout a range of 20 degrees and is streamlined to minimize drag resistance. The mechanical wheel for adjusting the windshield is recessed between the instruments. Another unique design on the RllOORS is the adjustable handlebars. ·The handlebars are made of forged aluminum segments and are connected to an ultra-strong aluminum tube to which the controls and instruments are fastened. Incorporating forged precision teeth, the adjustment mechanism allows adjustment of the handlebar in seven stages by up to 20mrn, plus three adjustment angles at increments of six degrees each. The adjustment mechanism is easilyaccessible, requiring the rider to loosen one hex-head bolt on each side. You might notice that the seat is subdivided into two sections, that's because the driver's seat is adjustable, as well.
