way and that was the end of the story. There were blue flags, he (palmer) just ignored them. He's been around long enough, he should know better. He knows about letting the leaders go by." Though the battle for the win was over, war waged on in the struggle for third. As Bradshaw and LaRocco headed for home they, too, encountered traffic, with Bradshaw getting balked in the triples. laRocco took advantage and took over the final spot on the winner's podi~ urn. Stanton, Craig, Lamson, Kiedrowski, Emig and Buehl rounded out the top 10 finishers. "He (Bradshaw) made an error and I took advantage of it," LaRocco said. "I'm not disappointed in my ride; everything worked really good. I just didn't get the start necessary to win. They (McGrath and Swink) got the start and got away from us." "I didn't do nothing but catch 'em," Bradshaw said. "A lapped rider got in the way on the triples and that's when laRocco got by. The two front-runners faded - just not enough." McGrath's plan had worked. "He (Swink) passed me once on lap 18, then I just raced as hatd as 1 could," McGrath said. "1 don't know if riding the semi had an effect, but it probably did in the last five laps because of the flu. I saw his (Swink's) fender and 1 knew it was a Suzuki. 1 didn't hear revving, so 1 figured it wasn't Cooper. And I'd seen Bradshaw earlier, so 1 knew it wasn't him. I got a big burst of energy when I saw the white flag. My arms are fine now. I think I was just nervous for the first two races. Now I feel like I'm one of the guys who should be out there racing." 125ccMain The IS-lap 12Scc feature pitted the two heat race winners, Lawrence and Gaddis, against each other, with a little international flavor thrown in to boot. At the drop of the gate, it was former Washington resident Lance Smail nailing down the holeshot on his Honda CR12S. Smail was followed into turn one by Gaddis, who quickly moved past Smail on the inside. Lawrence shadowed the two from his third-place position. Gaddis held the lead for two laps before Lawrence swooped past in the whoops. The Californian would never be headed again as he cruised to an easy victory, the first of his career. On the third lap, three of the top five crashed together at the end of the triplejump section. Team Splitfire/Hot Wheels/Pro Circuit's Mike Chamberlain, Smail and Anaheim winner Damon Huffman ended up in a pile. Smail, who had crashed in his heat race after tangling with Pichon, was the only rider to fully recover, and he ended up seventh at the finish. Suzuki's Huffman would crash again and finish 19th, Chamberlain didn't restart and was credited with 22nd. The crash allowed France's two-time 12Scc Supercross Champion Mickael Pichon to move into third place as the top three - Lawrence, Gaddis and Pichon - were now well clear of the fracas behind them. Cyril Porte held down fourth, a posi tion he would maintain to the finish, with David Pingree and Tommy Clowers battling behind him. Meanwhile, up front, Lawrence was having an easy time of it. "I got a fairly decent start and just started passing guys," Lawrence said later. "I stayed out front and rode smooth. It's my first win, but it won't be my last - I hope." Gaddis also seemed to be in control of his own destiny. But it all went suddenly wrong two laps from the end. It was then that Gaddis crashed, on the off-<:ambered comer just before the start/finish jump. Pichon was close enough to capitalize, and the Frenchman was able to hold off Gaddis to the finish line for second place. "I got a little lucky with a couple of riders crashing in front of me," Pichon said through an interpreter. "I'm very pleased." Pichon will ride at the next round of the series in San Diego, California, before heading back to Europe to compete in the World Championship 125cc MX Series. He had nearly won the second 12Scc heat race, only to be passed by Lawrence in the final comer. Gaddis was less than pleased with his third-place finish, though, he remains firmly in the championship hunt, only four points behind Lawrence, 69-65. "I got one wheel in and one wheel out of a rut," Gaddis explained. "It was a bad deal. I just blew it - there's no excuse. There's a lot more races left, but I've definitely got to get on the gas." Behind the top three, Porte had a rather lonely ride to fo~ place, leading Gonzalez, David Pingree, Smail, Clowers, Jason Krempin and Ray Crumb across the finish line. 0' Results 250 HEAT 1, 1.
