ESPN will start running thiS year's weekly Camel Supercross Series shows on Thursday, April 2, with the opening round which took place at Orlando, Florida, on January 9 the subject of the first show. The shows will air at 9:30 p.m. Thursday evenings in the Pacific time zone (12:30 a.m. Fridays in the Eastern time zone) through July 8. Spectro Oils of America has announced its '93 Spectro Gold Contingency Program. The program offers more than $50,000 with $36,000 being posted in the AMA National Championship Road Race Series in the 600 and 750cc Supersport classes, and the Endurance and Harley-Davidson Twin Sports classes. Riders using Spectro engine oil in those classes will earn $250 for a win, $100 for second, and $50 for third. A series title will earn $5000, second overall $3000 and third $1000. The remainder of the contingency program is being posted at off-road events, including the AMA National Championship Enduro, Hare Scrambles and Hare & Hound Series as well as the non-championship Alligator Enduro which takes place at Daytona during Cycle Week, plus the Baja 1000 and Baja International races. Novice or amateur road racers aboard Yamaha's Seca II 600cc motorcycle will be eligible for more than $50,000 through the Seca II Challenge Series. The series will consist of six WERA races and six AMA/CCS races and will culminate in a final race that will be held at the WERA Grand National Finals at Road Atlanta in October. Series races will award $1000 for first, $750 for second, $500 for third, $250 for fourth and $100 for fifth. The first three finishers in each series race will qualify for the final. The top 10 riders in the final will be awarded contingency cash ranging from $5000 for firstto $250 for 10th. In addition to the Yamaha payout, Vance & Hines will be posting 10% of Yamaha's payout for each position at each race and the finals for riders using Vance & Hines exhaust systems. Yamaha has also posted contingency prize money for other AMA/CCS and WERA classes as well as for the AMA Superbike and 250 GP divisions. Included in the contingency'program are the AMA/CCS GTO and GTU endurance classes, the WERA Mediumweight and Heavyweight classes in both Production and Superbike divisions, the WERA Pto Series Formula USA races, and Willow Springs M.e. events. AHRMA has asked us to advise southbound vintage bike flat track racers that they'll have to spend another hour and a half on 1-95 at the start of Daytona Cycle Week. The February 28 AHRMA National Dirt Track race will take place at Municipal Stadium in Daytona, not at Jax Raceway in Jacksonville as we reported earlier. Sign-up at Municipal Stadium opens at 9 a.m. and racing gets underway at 3 p.m. The AHRMA National Dirt Track scheduled for Thursday, March 4, at Volusia Speedway has been canceled. Former National Superbike Champion Thomas Stevens and his Team Suzuki teammate Britt Turkington will visit Apache Motors in Phoenix at 6 p.m. on February 12. Their appearance is in conjunction with that weekend's AMA National Championship Road Race Series meet a t Phoenix International Speedway. Apache Motors is located at 3618 West Cameback Road. Well, here's a switch on that routine. Shawn McNary of Clearwater, Florida, is a tool and die maker at Sun MicroStamping Inc. in Largo, Florida. He'll campaign the Harley-Davidson Twin Sports Series and also contest the dirt track races selected by the AMA this season under the banner of Fletcher's Harley-Davidson of Clearwater. What makes the deal even sweeter is the fact that his employer will also support him. Steven Tartaglia, vice president of Sun MicroStamping, wrote Papa to tell him of McNary. "...all of Shawn's bosses at Sun MicroStamping are cycle enthusiasts and subscribers to Cycle News," Tartaglia said. When Team Honda's Steve Lamson was given permission to ride around the supercross track at the Kingdome in Seattle, Washington, prior to the start of practice on Saturday, January 30, it caused quite an uproar with the other teams. Lamson's test ride also opened some eyes since his Honda CR250 was fitted with some sort of computerized suspension 'telemetry device. When questioned about the suspension system, Ron Heben, Lamson's mechanic played dumb and refused to comment. "1 don't know what you're talking about," he said. In response to the outcry by the other race teams, the AMA docked Lamson the equivalent number of laps when official practice got underway. Team Suzuki's Guy Cooper crashed during the main event at Seattle and dropped out with an injured left shoulder. X-rays failed to reveal any bone damage, though a separated shoulder is still a possibility. At press time, Cooper was still scheduled to race the San Diego Supercross, but was planning to have further tests done on Tuesday, February 2. With the Honda-using Grand Prix road race teams recently completing the Australian portion of their testing schedule, comparisons can be made to other teams that have tested at Phillip Island. The quickest 500cc time was turned in jointly by Rothmans Honda's Daryl Beattie and defending World Champion Wayne Rainey at oneminute, 35.3 seconds. Rainey's times were set in la te December on his 1992 Yamaha YZR500, and the Californian is currently back in Australia testing the '93 version. Lucky Strike Suzuki's Kevin Schwantz did a best of 1:36.0 while his teammate Alex Barros clocked a 1:36.5. Campsa Honda's Alex Criville did a 1:36.6; Shinichi Hoh a 1:37.7 and new Marlboro Yamaha recruit Luca Cadalora a 1:38.5. The fastest of the 250cc men continues to be Lucky Strike Suzuki's John Kocinski with a 1:37.2. Doriano Romboni clocked a 1:37.8 on his Honda NSR250 with Max Biaggi next at 1:38.1, followed by Loris Capirossi at 1:38.6, Tadayuki Okada at 1:39.0 and Alberto Puig at 1:39.5. I Campsa'Honda's Alex Criville suffered injuries to his heel in a Honda NSRSOO-destroying crash last week at Sydney, Australia's Eastern Creek, the site of the season opening Australian GP on March 28. Criville will be out of action for six weeks, but should be healthy for the Australian road race series opener. According to the good folks at Daytona International Speedway, the Daytona Hadey-Davidson Twin Sports race has attracted a "70-rider (and counting) entry." Led by two-time series champ Scott Zampach, the 883 Sportsters take to the 3.57-mile road course at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 7, as the opening race of the final day of Camel Cycle Week. On Friday, February 6, Team Yamaha's Damon Bradshaw, Doug Dubach and Jeff Emig will be at North County Yamaha (NCY) in Escondido, California, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to sign autographs and bench race with their fans. Also in attendance will be Tommy Clowers and Tyson Vohland of the NYC/Yamaha Supercross Team and Larry Brooks, Shawn Kalos and Kyle Lewis of Team Noleen/Yamaha Ultracross Team. The Atlanta Amateur SUJ?ercross has been rescheduled for Saturday morning, February 20, a shift from the previously announced date of February 21.
