GMOTOCROSS Florida Wmter AMA Series: Round 3 e Bryan Abel (241) chased Kevin Windham (511) in the 250cc B class. Windham topped the 125 and 250cc B and 125cc Youth divisions. Mike Duffield (592) led Paul Currie (34), Scott Davis (12), Mike Bragg (280) and Nathan Ramsey (46) through the first tum in the 16-24 race. Currie earned the win. 18 then everyone started to T-bone my bike," said Ferry. With a clear track ahead of him, Neese turned up the heat and pulled away from the rest of the pack. Once he established a wide margin, Neese settled into a pace that kept him comfortable and out of reach. After crossing the finish line first and clinching the overall win, the Kawasaki Team Green/ Answer/Barrs/Scott/Tsubaki/Dunlop/ Hammerhead Graphics rider said, "I knew that 1 could get out there and win if 1 got a good start. This win gives me a big confidence boost" Curry's hopes of an overall win were dashed with a faulty ignition early in the moto. Ferry turned in the ride of the day by charging through the pack after his first-turn crash and finishing second ahead of Pat Barton, Dengler and McMillen. Neese won the tiebreaker over McMillen for second overall. The first 250cc Pro moto saw Brian McElroy grab the lead ahead of Fred Andrews, Barton, Carl Vaillancourt, Beval Jerome, ,!::ince QeYane, Curry and Ferry. McBlioy began to inch away from Andrews, who had a firm grip on second by the start of lap two. Ferry, though, set a blistering pace and began to sneak his way towards the leaders. Ferry closed in on Andrews and made the pass for second on lap seven, then set out after·McElroy, who by that time had established a huge lead. Ferry quickly closed the gap on McElroy and looked to make the pass on a fast downhill jump. "I tried to pass Brian, but my front wheel washed out over the berm after the jump and 1went down," said Ferry. Ferry remounted nine seconds down and rode like a wildman to catch up, but came up four seconds short at the flag. Yamaha of Shelby/WKR/Pro Action/ Dunlop/FMF/ AXO/Maxima/Scott/ Renthal-backed McElroy notched the win over Ferry and said, "The early going was fun, but then my clutch started to go away. 1 had a tough time getting my front wheel out of the ruts." Andrews finished third, ahead of Curry and DeVane. The start of moto two saw, Barton, Jerome, Plotts, Andrews and Vaillancourt lead the way. Just as James Stewart (259), here passing another rider, scored the overall win in the Pee Wee class. McElroy did in moto one, Barton took full advantage of his holeshot and proceeded to pull away for the win. "I'm a sand specialist, and 1 felt really.. focused and comfortable today," said Tuf/Glastonberry Cycle/Answer / Powerbar/ Artco Designs/ShOO/Smithbacked Barton. Jerome held down a strong second for nine laps before finally giving way to Ferry, who had again raged through the pack after suffering a bad start. Ferry blasted past the mysterious European rider on the downill jump but didn't set out after Barton. "Barton had a big lead. I tried to cut it down, but I knew that the overall was mine and there was no reason to charge," said Ferry, who coasted across the finish line second. FirSt-moto winner McElroy pulled off the track and carded a DNF. '1 was midpack when 1 fell and broke the hydraulic front brake line. 1 was afraid that it would get caught in the front wheel so 1pulled off," said McElroy. Multi-time Canadian National Champion Ross Pederson ruled the Vet Pro class, as the 32-year-old ran down Kevin Knight in moto one, and Alan Andreau in moto two. "These guys are as wild as the 125cc pros," said Pederson, who also contested the 125 and 250cc Pro classes. Greg Rand, Neese, Dengler, Chad Lowe and Barton battled for top honors in the 125cc A class. Dengler ran down Rand for the first moto win, and Neese edged Lowe for the win in moto two. Lowe captured the over.all with a 3-2 tally, edging Rand's 2-3. Derek Youngblood, Barton, Earl May and Dengler provided the fireworks in the 250cc A class. Youngblood led, but lost a close three-way battle to Dengler and Barton in moto one. Youngblood roosted back in moto two and earned a hard-fought win in the second race. Kawasaki Team Green's Kevin Windham scored the 125 and 250cc B and 125cc 12-15 year-old class wins. Windham split moto wins with Robbie Skaggs in the 250cc Band 125cc 12-15 classes, but posted the all-important second-moto wins. "Robbie and 1 had some good races," said Windham. "I caught my foot in a rut in one of the 250cc B motos, and had to come back from fifth." John Fesler, who moved to Florida from Alaska in order to enjoy a longer race season, lost a tie-breaker with Paul Currie in the 16-24 year-old class. Fesler smiled and said, "It was 20 below zero in Alaska this week. 1 love this Florida sun and sand." (:N Results 2: 125 PRO: 1. Jim Neese (Kaw); Kurt McMillen (!
