Dwelley grabs Vet honors at Orlando Motocross By Lou Whitney ORLANDO, FL, DEC. 27 The Orlando Motocross Park saw a record turnout for Florida's Super Challenge IV, whieh was highlighted by Plus 30 class winner, Glen Dwelley. There were so many good races during the day, that it was difficult to isolate one or two that stood out over the others, but the Plus 30 Vet class had to qualify as one of the many outStanding races of the day. It was one of the larger classes, and the start of the first moto was a sight to behold, as the class roared down Orlando's infamous long start into the high· banked comer. The pack was so tight, it seemed like a choreographed start. When the dust cleared, it was Honda-mounted Dean Dyess who was in the lead. Close on his rear wheel was James Dlabal, Robert Huston and Dwelley. All four riders kept up a blistering pace and rode a (lawless. race. for the first three laps. During the fourth lap, Dyess laltered, and all 01 the front-runners got by him. Also, George Fanelli, who worked his way up from midpack, . slipped into the third spot behind Dwelley and Dlabal. Dlabal kept up the pace, and took the moto win. Fanelli got by Dwelley in the last lap to capture second, but Dwelley was pllshing him hard at the finish. Rounding out the top five WclS the always competitive John Gillespie and Robert Huston. In the second mota, the track conditions had c.\langed dramatically due to an unpredieted, and unwelcomed downpour. The starting field was thinned out a little, but there were plenty of die-hards left for a good race. The start was a repeat of the first moto (except for the dust), wi\h Dyess ta king the holeshot. Dyess' glory was short-lived when the muddy track took its toll in the second lap. Dwelley, who was running second, took over the lead. and Fanelli was close on his heels. Coming up from midpack to take the third place position was Armando Carrasquillo. The front-runners managed to hold their positions in spite of the slippery track conditions, and Dwelley showed the crowd (and the young guys) how to do clickers over a muddy finish line jump. Rounding out the top five in the second mota was Gillespie in fourth, and Tim Eggers in fifth. At the other end of the spectrum was the Pee Wee class. The Orlando MX Park opened a new Pee Wee track this week, and had a record turnout of riders to compete in this always exciting class. Jason Gillespie won both motos. Finishing second and third were two up-andcoming ladies of motocross Sri.anna Millsaps' a,nd Marissa Hampshire. These two young ladies show no mercy to the guys when they're on the track. Shayne Barry and Phillip Hewett also ran a good race to capture fourth and fifth, respectively. One of the features of the Florida Super Challenge Series is the "Dealer Team' races. The Florida dealers sponsor a five-person team that represents their dealership. The team accumulating the highest number of points for the day's event wins a six-foot trophy.
