BMOTOCROSS was conducted all race long. At the £lag runner-up honors went to Brandon Lacey, with Ray Mitchell third. Brad Woolsey pulled off the holeshot in the second moto, but by the second lap Windham was where he would stay - out front. Brian Carlson then passed Woolsey to take over second, but Woolsey used lapped riders t9 his advantage and got the spot back and then held off Mitchell to hold it at the checkered flag. Soon after, Mitchell got in on the action by sneaking past Carlson to take over third. Lacey would not be left out, as he, too, took a shot at Carlson and moved into the number four spot, forcing Carlon back to fifth. Mitchell's 3-3 moto finishes gave him second overall behind Windham. eN Results e ---..'--- Johnny Ma~ey (90) and Jake Jones (56) battled in the Mini Junior (7-11) Stock and Modified classes, with Marley scoring both wins. (Left to right) Teny Tinney, Robbie Reynard and Dennis Hawthorne collect their awards. Reynard, Windham make waves at Lake Whitney By Kat Spann WHITNEY, TX, DEC. 19-20 obbie Reynard and Kevin Windham were the talk of the track at Lake Whitney Cycle Ranch's GNC Regional, which drew over 350 entries for the two-day event. Fourteen-year-Qld Windham competed in six events, winning 10 of his 12 motos in the 125 and 250cc Intermediate Stock, Modified and Open classes. Fifteen-year-old phenom Reynard topped both the 125 and 250cc Expert classes in Sunday's action, topping veterans like Dennis Hawthorne, Terry. Tinney, Billy Whitley, Grayson Goodman and Roy Schellenberger. Thirteen-year-old Charley Bogard made a clean sweep in both the 125cc Stock and Modified Novice classes, and also won both 80cc Senior (12-13) motos. Heavy fog and a light mist hovered over the track all day Saturday during the first round of motos. The fog finally lifted midday Sunday, but ominous grey clouds still threatened rain. The event R 30 had been postponed earlier due to storm warnings. Yamaha-mounted Schellenberger led the first three laps in the first 250cc Expert moto before getting passed by homestate hero Hawthorne, who was aboard a Kawasaki. But all eyes were focused on Reynard, who got off to a sixth place start but was working his way up through the pack. The Kawasaki rider soon had control of third, passed Schellenberger for second, then set his sights on Hawthorne. The two hooked up in a duel that would last for two laps before Reynard got the upper hand over a section of jumps. Reynard then pulled away from Hawthorne and scored the moto win. Hawthorne had to settle for second, while Tinney slid into third after fourth-place Schellenberger stalled his bike in a turn. Schellenberger was later docked a lap for jumping the starting gate and dropped to eighth. Billy Whitley moved into fourth ahead of Grayson Goodman. "It's getting pretty rough and it:s very hard to pass ou t there," said Reynard. "I got a bad tart and made a lot of mistakes, but I thought to myself, 'try to be smooth.' r ran out of tear-offs when I got behind Dennis, then I just got lucky and got around him as fast as I did." Tinney nailed the holeshot in the second moto ahead of Reynard and Hawthorne. Reynard then shot past Tinney to take the lead only to crash and drop back to eighth. But Reynard had no thought of giving up. He remounted and picked off riders one by one until he had passed Hawthorne for second" Then he set after the leader, Tinney, and passed him three laps from the finish. Reynard went on to score .the moto win and the overall victory, while Tinney took second and Hawthorne third. "I didn't think I was going to catch them," said Reynard. "I thought they _ were too far ahead. I just got up and tried my best. I caught up and got around them as fast as I could. I don't like eating dirt." Hawthorne came back and scored a narrow win over Reynard in the first 125cc Expert moto. "Robbie's a tough competitor," said Hawthorne. ''I'll have my work cut out for me in the second moto, that's for sure. It was all I could do to hold him off in this one. I know the guy (Reynard) is destined for greatness, so what can I say. I'll beat him when I can, but if we were to count the scores, he's beat me more than I've beaten him." As it turned out, Reynard was just too much for Hawthorne in the second moto. Reynard blasted out of the starting gate and into the lead and went on to score a seemingly easy win which gave him the overall victory. Hawthorne thwarted the challenges by Whitley to finish second. The 250cc Modified Intermediate event saw Kawasaki-mounted Windham nail the holeshot, and then score a runaway win. Ray Mitchell topped a multi-rider battle to take second with third going to Brandon Lacey. Sunday's second moto saw Mitchell jam into the early lead, but it wouldn't last for long, as Windham soon motored by and ran away with the race. Mitchell hung on to second despite strong challenges by third- and fourth-place finishers Lacey and Carlson. Windham blasted off the gate and into a comfortable lead in the first moto of the 125cc Stock Intermediate class and sailed to an easy win. While Windham had things his way up front, a furious battle for the spots behind him TEENY M1NI STK: 1. Logan Willi.lms (Yam); 2. Jonathan Leasure (Yam); 3. L.G. Tretter (Yam); 4.
