Help!
Perhaps a Cycle Naus reader can help
me with a dual-purpose journey that I
have planned for this winter.
On January 28 I will fly to Miami and
pick up my 1982 Honda XI250 which is
being stored there by a friend. I then
will air freight it to the Republic of
Panama. I then have two months to
return to Michigan. Since I'm not "Iron
Man" Kretz, I don't want to ride it back
to Michigan at the end of March. I plan
to enter the United States at
Brownsville, Texas, make my way to
Houston and then fly home.
Some possibilities could be: find a
friendly motorcycle dealer that will sell
it for me on consignment, or perhaps a
fellow motorcyclist is coming up this
way by four-wheeler and could haul it
along. Can anybody help?

Dirt track help
Are there still restrictors on the
Hondas in Class C flat track racing? If
so, why? The Hondas need all the help
they can get against the Harleys.
Charles Albright
Reno,NV
According to the AMA professional rulebook, All RS750 Hondas and XR750
Harley-Davidsons must be equipped with
manifold plates, one per cylinder, for all
competition except IT. All intake air for
e1U1, cylinder must be inducted through
these plates." The rules call for 33mm manifold plates. Many professional dirt track racers feel that it isn't just the Hondas that
lIeed help, but also the XR750s ridden by
those who are not fortunate enough to have a
Harley factory ride. Two-time Grand
National Champion Ricky Graham, who
campaigned a Honda RS750, was quite
vocal throughout last season regarding the
fact that although he could run with them,
he couldn't draft pass Harley factory riders

and half-mile (1T?) races at a less expensive Pro-Am level could be created, that
rrught be a step on the road to recovery.
To promote new dirt track events
successfully, there's no substitute for
advance planning, organizational and
promotional skills, experience and a lot
of hard work. There are two people who
are successfully beating the odds: Bob
and V!!lma Bagwell of Mesquite, Texas.
At their three-day half-mile series at
Kilgore and Devils Bowl last year, there
were 138 AHRMA vintage, 182 professional and 280 amateur entries. A few
seasons ago, Dick Mann said, "If the
sport had seven or eight more Bagwells,
in three to four seasons a reverse trend
would be possible."

The Bagwells, who began hosting pro
races in 1954, will host their 13th Annual
Pre-Daytona Half Mile a t Devils Bowl
Speedway in the Dallas suburb of Mesquite,
Texas, on Sunday, February 21. The event is
an AMA-sanctioned Pro-Am meet. In addition, the Bagwells will promote two more
Pro-Am meets at Devils Bowl, one on May
23 and the other on October 9-10. For further information, call 214/216-5520. The
track will also be the site of an AMA Grand
National Championship Series round on
June 19. The race, the first Grand National
in Texas since the 1986 Houston Short
Track, is being promoted by former Grand
National Champion Mike Kidd...Editor.

I share concerns expressed by other
readers on this page about the future of
dirt track racing at the grass roots level.
Non-National professional TT, short
track and half-mile racing has declined
alarmingly with the booming era of the
late '60s and early 70s. There are many
causes for grass roots dirt track racing
taking the appearance of heading
towards dinosaur history. They are too
numerous to mention.
In my musing for an antidote, it
seems if several sub-series of short track

I just want to pass on a very strong
thank you for the good job on presenting our Fantic trials bikes in your
buyer's guide issue. I have had very
good response from this already. In the
past, I have received a call or two, but
this time the response was overwhelming. I credit this to, first, the great job
you guys did, and also to a growing
increase in the last year in the sport of
trials. The last item could also be attributed partly to you people for all of the
good press we've had from you this past
year. Again, thanks so much. Keep up
the good work.
