Harley-Davidson Twin Sport National Champion Scott Zampach and veteran dirt track racer Garth Brow took part in a December 30 test session at Florida's Daytona Beach Municipal Stadium in preparation for the inaugural race in the H-D 883 Grand National Dirt Track Series. Roy Janson and Merrill Vanderslice of the AMA were on hand to see how well the machines ran on the banked, quarter-mile track. "The obje~t of the test was to see how the 883 would perform on the quarter-mile," Janson said. "We've tested on both a 3/8ths and a 5/8ths mile track and felt we needed to see how things went here." Zampach said, "I've ridden the bike on the ,halfmile and it's a lot of fun. The quartermile is quite a bit more work." Brow felt the bike performed quite well. "We made a lot of progress on suspension settings and that's the key on any track. Actually, this bike, the 883, seems to be more fun than riding a 600 here. 1 never got a chance to try it with the right gearing because the test got cut short because we sheared off the rear sprocket bolts."
