McCormick doubles at WoodlandMX By Derryl Anderson Campbell conquers Carlsbad Toys For Tots GP By Donn Maeda CARl58AO, CA. DEC. 6 amie Campbell trounced the 200cc field aboard his Kawasaki 10(125 at the annual Toys For Tots Grand Prix, held at Carlsbad Raceway. The Southland Racing Association-promoted race helps gather toys for the United States Marine Corps-sponsored charity, and several marines were on hand to collect toys from the race entrants. "We think that Toys For Tots is an excellent charity," said the Southland Racing Association's Don Suitor. "We hold this race every year in order to help out the needy children." The six-mile track routed competitors through the hills surrounding the famous raceway and incorporated a short section of the motocross course and asphalt drag strip as well. Heavy J 18 rains several days before the race left the track in ideal condition throughout most of the day. As the lone Expert rider, Campbell has little trouble assuming the lead early in the single 45-minule moto. Noviceclass racers John Conrad, Trevor Smith and Tore Amato, as well as Amateurclass competitor Bobby Hubbard gave chase in the early stages of the race. Hubbard worked his way past Amato and Smith on the opening lap, and later picked off Conrad as well. Once into second, though, Hubbard's charge through the pack was over, as he could do little to reel in Campbell. Campbell rode a smooth and controlled race to the finish and greeted the checkered flag in first overall. Hubbard was second and first Amateur, while Conrad, Smith and Amato claimed the top positions in the Novice division. Sixth overall and first in the Beginner class was Tommy Roberts. The 80cc class was run in conjunction with the 200cc race, and Jiri Dostal made short work of his competition. Dostal led Billy Macias and Ryan Mauhili WOODLAND, WA, NOV. 2ll Jason McCormick continued to shine in his rookie year as he dominated the 125 and 250cc Pro classes at the Woodland MX Park. A mild sunny day saw over 360 entries. In moto one of the 125« Pro class McCormick took the lead on lap one and never looked back. Shawn Waring chased, but never got within 50 yards. Mike Koehn rode in third for four laps before Marvin Waldo, who started in last, came all the way up to take rontrol of the position for good. In the second moto Sno Design/Bell/ PJIIJT /Renthal/Hillsboro Honda/Ralph Huffman-backed McCormick came off the line in about third place but quickly took over the lead position by turn two. Initially, Waring. Koehn and Bailey were righl behind McConnick, but lap by lap he pulled away from the pack. On lap three Bailey got by Koehn as did Bierek one lap laler. Mike Crader passed Koehn for fifth place on lap five and the final order was set. McCormick won, with Waring and Bailey following. In the 250cc Pro class' first moto, McCormick got the lead on lap one and never looked back as he easily outdistanced Don Boespflug, Don Bisceglia, Bierek and John Verdon!<. Moto two saw McCormick get another holeshot over Mike Bell, Bisceglia, Boesplug and Kenny OISj!Jl. The top four positions remained the same for the rest of the race. In the 250cc Intermediate class Ouis Dineen put together two good motos to sco~ the overall in the highly-<:ompetitive class. Results w/P/w, L G.vy ~ (Yom~ ~ Mom HoItpion); 3. Reynolds wraps up Leftover Turkey Trial By Don Williams LUCERNE VALLEY, CA, NOV. 29 Sweetwater Trials~sponsored Gas-Gas rider Kevin Reynolds turned in twin perfect loops to come from behind and ta ke the Senior (40+) Novice win at the Leftover Turkey Trial. Only four dabs separated first from sixth at the very low scoring event. Reynolds' three dabs on the opening circuit were the only mistakes he made as he moved from fifth to the winners' spot. Of the top six riders in the division, only runner-up Mark Gravitt was unable to tum in a perfect loop in the event. Gravitt's ronsistent 21-1 ca.rds were enough to put him ahead of Charley Lamb who fived one section on the first loop, but otherwise rode perfectly the entire day. Although Technique Trials Club is known for its difficult events, many riders in the Novice and Beginner cJasses had unusually low scores. There were 20 clean Novice loops and 10 clean Beginner cards turned in on the cool. breezy, sunny day. The top three classes had a more difficult, but still relatively easy day. The sections roncenlrated on technical challenges rath~r than huge steps on the Cougar Buttes slabs. Senior Advanced rider Clive Hannon opened up an eight-point advantage in the closest two-person battle of the day. Arizona-based rider Sheldon Hef1en spent the rest of the day improving his score while Hannon was moving backward. Heflen erased half the lead on the second loop and moved ahead 9-5 in the tie-breaking clean total. That proved to be the deciding factor as HeIlen eradicated the rest of Hannon's lead on the final loop and added to his clean advantage. Heflen and Hannon both carded 51 points and w hen scorekeeper Ma ry CoUier ta Uied the cleans, Heflen had a commanding 13-8 lead. Kevin Norton built up a lead over Jared Malmquist in the Championship class and coasted to a solid 72-81 victory. Although normaUy the top overall scores are turned in by riders in one of the "old man·· divisions of each class, it was an unusual sweep by the "open age" divisions for the title of "best in class Sportsman David Pyle, Intermediate Rick Jenkins, Novice Ron Cavataio and Beginner Mitch Reichardt (riding an Aprilia he had pur-. chased the previous day) all turned in the best H •
