"The diff erent gearbox was better
than th e other one I had in," J a mes

Steven s had hoped to get a quicker

Stevens said. "He did, and wh en he
pulled the trigger coming out he went
a little bit sideway s, so I th ought for
a second that I might have a cha nce.
But when I pulled the trigger, I did
the same th ing. We were both go ing
side wa ys together through th e last

Despite being upset with Sado wski
for hi s weaving maneu vers up the fro m
straigh t, Picotte was ab le.to secu re fifth
lat e in th e race, with Sadowski holding
down sixth .
" I was stuc k with (Da le) Quarterley
(who retired wi th electrica l problems)
and ·Sad owski and when Quart eri ey
had his problem I was a lmos t ru n on
the grass," Pi cotte said. "Sadowski was
weaving all th e time a nd I co uldn ' t
ge t.a draft. Racing is not su p posed to
be like th at. It was dangerous. In
Steve Crevier (73), Dave Sadowski (25) and Pascal Picotte (34) were this close for the
majority of the National. Picotte finished fifth with Sadowski sixth; Crevier DNF.

Sadowski defended his action s: " If
he can' t follow the weave..... he sai d.
" I should have had Pi cotte. In tu rn
five I was runnin g in on Crevier an d
had to change my line. I clipped m y
brak e lever on his ta ilpiece, o therwise
I would have held him (Picotte) off.
T here are bl ack marks on m y leathers
fro m hi s (Picotte's) tires, but I don't
say any thi ng because th at's rac ing. If
he can ' t run with th e bi g boys he
sho u ld n' t be o u t there. I didn 't make
a ny a bru p t weaves."
Sadowski thanked his mech anics,
Craig Westwood ' a nd H en ry Koyota,
for their efforts.
Kipp co uld m anage no better th an

handleba r. " I almost came in because
every time I wen t to use th e front br ake
I was grabbing fa iring," Kipp said.
Schwa rzbach was unders tandably
happy with h is fourth- place finish :
"The bike was th e best it was all week,"
he said. " We made a coup le of changes
th is morning a nd I went a second faster
than in qualifyin g. It was a handful

b u t I got away a nd rod e by m yself.' :
