Topping the 250cc Novice class at Carlsbad's Hilltoppers GP w~ Aaron Lewis (121). District 37 Best of the West Series : Round 7 Young thunders at Hilltoppers GP By Ken Harvey, Jr. Photos by H ea ther McNabb CARLSB CA,JUNE 7 AD, 32 usq varna mot ocross rider Mi ke Young th u mped h is big fourstroke to two overa ll wins at Carlsbad Ra ceway, beating out all th e H reg ul ar District 37 riders in the process. Five races were held th ro ugho u t the su nny day, a nd near-perfect, th ough slightly dusty condi tions greeted th e co m petitor s. In th e first race o f the da y it was a no the r Husky rid er, Pet e Murry, jumping ou t 10 an ea rly lead in the U nclassified race. You ng was brea- ' thing dow n Murry' s neck until sta lling h is bike in a tigh t tu rn , a llo wing Billy Fullmer and Jimmy Lew is to snea k by. Lewi s sn uck by Fullmer a nd started to challenge Murry for the lead. A fair a mo unt of bar -bangin g and br ak echec ki ng ensued for a couple o f laps until Lewis took the insid e in a sweeper a nd stuffed Murry for the lead. Making up tim e o n the course was Young. Wit h two lap s rem aining he moved past Murry a nd set hi s sig h ts on th e lead. Putting h is mo tocro ss skills a nd the extra trac tio n of h is fourstroke to fu ll use, Young reeled in Lew is and passed for th e lead . With only on e lap rema in in g, Young was able to cru ise in for th e win . Lewis was set bac k one more posi tion as Yamaha rider Kevin G eyer slid past him o n the last pavem en t tu rn before ' the finish 10 grap seco nd overall a nd first in the 250cc division. Mu rry took fou rt h and Fullmer ro u nded ou t the top five. Seniors were nex t on th e program a nd it was H usa bu rg rider Eric J enson charging ou t to th e early lead. Fo llowing closely was Dave"Double -j u m p " Kersting and Bob Wadl ow . J en son rode sm oothly and began to put time on th e field as th e hou r-and-a-half race cont in ued. Wadlow was ge tti ng accusto rned to his new KX500, and started ma king up time. H e took seco nd fro m Kersting a nd kep t chargi ng. J ens on was still loo ki ng for th e win, until encou nterin g trouble. " I had a problem with end u ra nce, I didn 't have any," said J ens on. Wadlow finally too k the lead with two laps rema ini ng, a nd he ld it to the finish . A litt le fa rthe r back, the race o f the day had to be between UE A members Ed Butler and Ed Mazenko. " We were never more th an 30 feet a pa rt, " sai d Mazenko. Both riders were covered with dust from the ordeal, Butler co m ing through with the advantage by a little over a second. He made his move by o u t-brea king Mazenko on the drag stri p a nd sliding by h im into the mot ocross section. . Sta rt ing fro m the last ro w was th e Women 's class , a nd as usu al it was Anna Cody o u t in fro n t. Fo llowing closel y were Susa n McWilliams and Viki Scott. Leading th e Amat eur class was Kelly Berg ma n, a nd bring in g u p th e rear was Bergman's mother An nie Cren sh aw, ri ding th e fir st Grand Prix o f her career. Cody was able to leave th e rest of th e Wo men 's class competitors behind, an d began chasing down th e m en. . Wadl ow ended up with th e overa ll win in th e Senior class, a lmost 45 seco nds ahead o f J enson. Kersting was next across the line, a nd not much further back was Co dy taking th e Women's class victory and bea ting m ost of the gu ys. Vets were nex t off th e line and it was ano ther cha nce for Pete Murry to ta ke a win. KTM's Sco t Harden had o ther ideas, how ever. T he two had left th e pack and set a blistering pace, stayi ng abou t 20 seconds a part for m ost of th e race. At the one-hour mark, H ard en picked up th e pace a nd started moving in on Mur ry. About th e sam e time, Murr y had to make a pit stop to tak e on fuel. H arden too k th e lead wit h Mu rr y leavin g th e pi ts righ t on hi s ta il. Mu rry hou nded Harden for • th e la st few la ps, and o n the final circuit made a wild move th ro ugh the downhill section. Out in th e weeds, Murry flew past H arden and secured the lead . In the 250cc race it was Kenny Perr y taking th e early lead a nd never looki ng -back, although a la te-race charge was mou n ted b y G rant Pal en ski. Ron ' Law son was in the hu nt u ntil grem li ns finally slow ed his p rogres s. At the fin ish it was Murry with th e overall and Perry scoring th e 250cc class win. Another moto cr osser, C hico Motorsp orts-sp onsored Aaron Lewis was out in front of th e Novice class after the firs t lap. So Ca l M.C.'s J eff Kell er made a valiant charge for the lead , coming close wh en Lewis had to pit for fuel. Lewis scored th e wi n and said, " T his is grea t, 200 Yarn ab ucks l," speaki ng of the co ntingency mon ey avai la ble for th e Best of th e West Seri es. T he fin al race of th e da y put the Expert rid ers o n th e trac k. Mik e Young was agai n o ut in front after th e long drags trip sta rt . Follo wing h im closely were J ohnn y Cam pbell a n d Scot H ard en, who was com peting in his th ird race of the day . Danny Hamel was making up for a poor start after smok ing h is tire off the l ine. Hamel mad e his way around H arden and set after Ca mp bell . Yo ung had mad e his lead ins urmountab le a nd was in cru ise mode for the win. H am el 's cha rges came u p short as Ca mbell hung on for second. J im m y Lewis j u mped out in front of th e 250cc ra ce, but Geyer was right behind, pushing for th e lead. H alf a lap la ter G eyer took the lead fro m Lewis, bu t crashe d on the next la p, a llowing Lewis back in front.
