I was aware he was back there, that was abo u t all. I wasn't going to worry abut him " Dubach finished third, 50 seconds behind Brad shaw , and Brooks took the checkered approximately II seconds la ter in fourth. After starting the moto in ninth, Kiedr owski ended up fifth , saf ely a head of P almer , Surratt , Suzuki-mounted Rich T aylor , Lawrence and Kawasaki rider Ray Sommo. Brooks., th e top pl acing privateer, said, " Actua lly, I kind of wimped o ut, out there. I could've charged harder, but I didn't want to take any chance of losing points. I wanted to mak e su re I didn't lose th em so I coul d gairi ground in the series. I got th e holeshot i n both motos, whi ch was good, because of the dusty conditions." 20 125cc National It wa s obvi ous who th e crowd ' favorite was in th e 125cc class, as the fans lined the course with banners welcoming Lamson back to racing. The local hero didn 't let an yone down and he rounded the first corner in the first moto on h is Pete Steinbrechertuned Suzuki RMI25 in second place. Many riders were left picking up th eir mounts after a first-tu rn p ile-up, whi ch included Suzuki's Brian Swink, Suzuki support rider J eff Dem ent, Team Peak 's Buddy Antu nez, and privateers Chris Neal and Pat Bennett . Emig avoided the mayhem and led the way, but his moment of glory only lasted for two laps before Lamson pow ered into th e lead , a lead , as it turned o ut, he would never let go of. "I was a little nervous at first wh en I was leading, " said Lamson . "The n I settled down and go t m y h ead straigh t. I felt real good and I didn 't get tired - that surprised me!" Emig held o n to second for most of th e race, until Guy Cooper passed him two laps from the fin ish. Cooper, wh o eventually fin ished second in the moto, rode a brilliant race aft er rounding the first lap near the middle of th e pac k. Em ig ended up third, approximately six seconds beh ind Cooper, and Kawa. saki's Ry an Hughes and Western Regional 125cc SupercrossChampion J eremy McGrath rounded o ut the top five on hi s Team Peak/Pro -Circuitbacked Honda CR125. After almost getting taken ou t in th e first turn pile-up, L aR occo landed sixth, closely followed by another local favori te T yson Vohland, Tuf Racing' s Ron Tichenor, last year 's winner Doug Henry and Swink. In the second rnoto, Emig o nce ag ain h ad . th e q uickest rea cti on off th e start ing line, and LaRocco and Lam son settled in behind him. T he th ree riders stayed in close format ion throug ho ut the race. Emi g led the way for II lap s until getting o ut of shap e while braking for a turn , whi ch opened the door for LaRocco to pass. Fo r the last four laps, LaRoc co grad ua lly pu lled away from Emig and crossed the fin ish line approxima tely 10 seconds ahead the Yamah a rider, wh ile Lam son fin ished a distant third. " Getti ng a good start was reall y important to day, " sai d L aRocco . "Th at mad e all the difference in the world. " Lamson, who locked up the overa ll win with a third pl ace finish , said, " If Em ig hadwon the moto, he would 've ta ken the overa ll , but I sa w th at La Rocco was right behind him, and I was prett y sure LaRocco would out last Emig, so I felt pretty good in th ird. I knew if LaRocco won, that I had th e overall. Once LaRocco pa ssed Emi g, I backed off a little bit. It felt so good winni ng in front of my hom etown, I was pum ped." Fin ish i ng a di stant fourth was Suzuki suppo rt rider Larry Ward , who su ccessfu ll y fended off a late-ra ce charge by Cooper, wh o had earlier cras hed wh ile running a solid fourth . " On th e fourth lap, I was trying to get a ro un d L arry (Ward) ," sai d Cooper. " I was trying different lines, and my front wheel washed o ut. My bike go t pretty bent up, so it took me a few laps to get back up to speed again. I made up abo ut 15 seconds, and tried to pass Larry aga in on the last lap. If I had had only one more lap!
