By th e fifth lap, Par ker and Carr had brok en a way fr om th e fi eld a n d e n j oy ed a th ree-second lead o ve r Atherton , wh o had passed Ingra m short ly after Carr did. Five bik e lengths behind Atherton , a war began o ver the fourth place position . Ingram, Morehead , Jones, Graham , P eg ra m , Merten s and Da vis circled the track with on ly inches separating them . While Parker, Ca rr a nd Atherton co ntinued to pull away, the positions o f th e blob o f rider s behi nd the m co ns ta nt ly cha nged, as eac h rid er took h is turn in the fourth-place posi tio n. O n th e l l th lap , Moreh ead sudden ly slo wed o n the back stra ig h taway a nd ret ired from the race. " T he ca r b u re to r fell o ff ," sai d Moreh ead in disgust. " If it 's not o ne thing it 's a no ther ." Wh en he slowed, Moreh ead narro w ly m issed being tagged by a few of h is fell o w riders. At th e halfwa y po int, King p ulled from the track with ' a flat tire after runni ng o ff the pace in l lth. Roed er was next to fall victim to a flat tire, and nea rly slid out in front of J o nes o n the 22nd lap. " All of a sudden I was totall y sid eways, I thought I was going to crash," said Roeder, who ran as high as fourth . Meanwhi le, Carr a nd Pa rker began to formu late th eir plans for th e fina l la p. "I knew th a t I cou ldn 't draft him on the fro nt straight very easily (beca use) there was a ta ilwi nd ," said Carr. " I kn ew tha t I would have to lead it ou t of four. " Pa rker obviously had the sa me idea , a nd fo llo wed Carr as they began the fi n al la p . " I go t a little sideways wh en 1 was co m ing off o f two, a nd he got by me," sa id Carr. Ca rr tried desperately to draft past Parker as they raced o u t of turn four for th e last time, but to no a vai l. Parker crossed th e fini sh line with room to spare over Ca rr.
