George Roeder sta rted the day by getti ng fast time la te in tim e tria ls wit h a 26.57 second lap, way o ff Dave Seh l's 1976 time o f 26.14, Roed er had an ea sy time taki ng h is heat, while Greg Sim s a lso easily wo n hi s heat aft er Ja son Fletch er dr o pped o u t wit h p rob lems. Dart -in Erichsen ba tt led Georgi e Price lo r the o ther heat win. As the Expert main even t's field sorte d itself dow n the bac kstra igh t, Erichsen held th e lead over Roeder . Si ms, Craig Estelle and Price. Roeder was in h is customary posi tio n, h igh in th e cush io n, wh ile Erichsen used th e lower line, b ut drifted hi gher comi ng o ll the turns. As they co mpleted th e. th ird la p , Roeder slipped into th e lead. wh i le Estelle took o ver third, but o n the next lap , Er ichsen had regai ned the lead , wh ile Price almost cras hed in the second turn. dropping back to 10th . Coming o ff th e fo urth turn to ta ke th e cros sed flags, Roed er slipped u nde r Eri chse n 's Frost Racing/Carl Patrick sponsored H arl ey to take the lead for good, although Eric hsen stayed clos e. Sims ~ot by Estell e for th ird o n th e ei gh th lap, while Price ma naged to fight hi s way back into fifth by the end. Rob Majesk i took the lead from J ack Fran klin, Ken Coolbeth . and J im Hollister as th e 600cc Pro final go t underway a nd wenl on to win . Ken Mohler took o ver fourth o n lhe second lap, with Coolbeth mo ving in to second for good alter gelling o ne of hi s typica lly lousy starts. Mohler got bv Fra n klin for th ird on the seven th la p. . A few m in u tes lat er , T om took Rob 's ma chine o ut a nd grabbed the lead and th en the win in the Senior fin al. J im Cha p ma n fin ished second , SCOll Sa u n ders held th e lead over Tom Majesk i and Clarence Bull a t the start o f the 750cc fin al . but Majeski took over at th e end 01 the third lap and wa s never press ured as he went o n to win . ~l errym an's win in th e 60cc B fina l was fairly easy. H e j umped o ut to a fo u r bike len gth margin in the seco nd tu rn a nd was never challe nged , wh ile Jeff Sa ssama n , Todd T emple and Jody Yearick ba ttl ed for secon d. Yeari ck qui ckl y di sp at ch ed T emple and stayed close to Sassam an, slip ping by as they headed down the back straight o n the final lap to ta ke second. Merry man 's 250cc B class win was much harder, espec ia lly sin ce he a nd Dillon Cava were sen t to the pits for ca usi ng both false starts in their heats, Since less tha n 12 riders signed up, th ey were allowed 10 start the final, and both made the most 01 it by quickly putting severa l length s on Eddi e Wharton, Nick Arment a nd Bobby Bills, with Cava ho ldin g the lead, Merry man fina lly got by Cava.on th e sixt h Jap as they exited the second tu rn .
