On th e eighth lap, Rogers blasted into seco nd, ahead o f Roed er. Camlin made his big move o n the white flag la p , a nd swooped past all of his riva ls and into th e lead. Graham wo uld have none of that, though, and drafted past as th ey made the mad dash towards the chec kered flag. Mertens also inched past, but Camlin he ld o n to finish third. " I thought I was going to hold them off, but I was just a lillie shan," said Caml in. "This is the first time that I' ve bee n in contention for the wi n since I broke my leg ," said Mertens, who spent most o f the 1991 seaso n heal in g. In the J unior cla ss, Perr ault was the o n ly rider to break into the 100 mphra nge, as he qualified fastest wi th a 35.775/ 100.628 lap and went o n to win h is hea t race. Perrault led th e wa y off th e line a nd quickly esta blis hed a heal th y lead , bu t sudde nly slowed a nd was reeled back in . Roeder closed in a nd sto le the lead o n la p eig h t, o nly to ha ve Perrault rocket by on lap nin e a nd nail do wn th e win . The race fo r seco nd went dow n to the wire with Roeder hanging o n for the spot over Beyer , Ek lu nd, James Hart and T im Selb y. Forty Pro -Am rider s were pl aced into fo u r scratch hea ts, with the top six tra ns ferr i ng to the regular heats. Mik e Warner, T odd Dough ty, Bryan G ra ybeal a nd Mike H acker won th e scratch heats. Doughty a nd H ack er ca m e back to win the two reg u la r heat s. Like th e Junior main , the Pro-A m fin al left th e line in a light rain. H acker immed iat ely took co n tro l a nd moved out to a big lead, but " just got tired a nd tried to be ca reful." Raben Will ia ms sto le the lead from th e tiring H acker on lap five, a nd led Do u g h t y, H a ck er , Gra ybea l a n d Wa rn er a t the start o f la p six. In th e rem ain in g la ps, the top five riders rode nose-to-tail. On th e last la p , H acker p icked up the draft and slip streamed past his peers to earn the win. Warner, Do ugh ty, G ra ybeal a nd Wil lia ms cro ssed the li ne in that order.
